Biocontrol, or protection, involves using living organisms such as microbes, insects, and their by-products to safeguard food security against harmful pathogens pests in agriculture. Excessive use of synthetic inputs fertilizers pesticides farming can lead soil accumulation crust formation over time. Inorganic chemical pollutants enter the chain through plant absorption from soil, resulting environmental public health concerns. Compensating for destructive effects on agroecosystems is challenging. Therefore, it important discuss future restoration microbial communities phyllosphere, endosphere, rhizosphere, growth–promoting microorganisms natural sources. Local governments should enforce legal restrictions frequency quantity conventional pesticide use, promote bioagents, encourage farmers stakeholders adopt alternatives. This chapter introduces various bio-based materials that serve alternatives chemicals eradicating minimizing invasive phytopathogen species biocontrol protection.

Given the environmental, ethical, and food security challenges posed by conventional agriculture animal husbandry, transition towards sustainable systems is essential. Plant-based foods, especially those enhanced fermentation, present a viable solution. Fermentation reduces ecological footprint, aligns with ethical standards, enhances plant-based proteins' nutritional value sensory attributes, offering credible alternative to products. This paper explores fermentation's transformative role in developing meats, dairy, protein alternatives, emphasizing its benefits, including improved gut health through probiotics prebiotics. It also addresses such as producing undesirable by-products, potential risks, increased costs associated fermentation. Detailed examinations of specific fermentation processes—alcoholic, lactic acid, acetic propionic butyric acid—and their impact on enhancing value, digestibility, flavor foods are presented. Case studies from pioneering companies demonstrate technologies' practical applications market potential. Lastly, discusses future opportunities scaling up processes incorporating advanced biotechnological techniques further enhance sustainability outcomes.

As significant fungal pathogens of crops, Fusaria species contaminate various food and feed commodities. Some the Fusarium spp. secondary metabolites (e.g., trichothecenes, zearalenone, fumonisins) are widely known toxic molecules (mycotoxins) with chronic acute effects on humans animals. The growing demand for safer, pesticide-free drives us to increase biological control during crop growing. Recent research suggests that lactic acid bacteria (LABs) as biocontrol best choice extenuating mycotoxins. Newly isolated LABs were tested antifungal agents against verticillioides, F. graminearum, oxysporum. characterized genetically identified belonged Limosilactobacillus fermentum (SD4) Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (FCW4 CB2) species. All their cell-free culture supernatants showed antagonism MRS solid medium. activity was also demonstrated surface-sterilized wheat peanuts. germination test corn kernels proved LAB strains SD4 FCW4 significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced root shoot development in plantlets while simultaneously suppressing outgrowth verticillioides. Small-scale silage fermentation revealed supplementation (decreased lower mold count, total reduction deoxynivalenol) within mixed populations.

The biotechnological potential of the lactic acid bacterial genus Weissella has not been fully unearthed. Since have tested against Fusaria and their mycotoxins, newly isolated confusa strains were characterized for antifungal capacities on Fusarium plant pathogens. W. BF2 ML2 successfully inhibited verticillioides NCIM 1100, F. 1099, graminearum MTCC 2089, oxysporum 284 in co-cultures. Ethyl acetate extracts cell-free culture supernatants (CFCS) also exhibited activity fungal cultures. main mycotoxins isolates. In MRS broth, was resistant to (deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, T2, fumonisin B1), while strain showed 22.1–24.5% growth inhibition. Meanwhile, neither bacterium mycotoxin reduction. study highlighted that CFCS are suitable inhibition, as shown surface-sterilized peanuts wheat grains, but elimination.

Emerging mycotoxins enniatins (ENNs) and beauvericin (BEA) pose potential health risks to humans through dietary exposure. However, research into their mechanisms of toxicity is limited, with a lack comprehensive toxicological data. This study investigates from hepatic lipid metabolism perspective, establishing more precise reliable 3D HepaRG hepatocyte spheroid model as an alternative for assessment. Utilizing physiological indices, histopathological analyses, lipidomics, molecular docking techniques, it comprehensively elucidates the effects ENNs BEA on homeostasis mechanisms. Our findings indicate that impact cellular viability biochemical functions, significantly altering pathways, particularly those involving glycerophospholipids sphingolipids. Molecular has demonstrated strong binding affinity key enzymes in such Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor α (PPARα) Cytosolic Phospholipase A2 (cPLA2), revealing mechanistic basis hepatotoxic impair liver function human health. These insights enhance our understanding hepatotoxicity fungal toxins lay foundation assessment risks.
