Inducing apparent memory recall by tagging and optogenetically reactivating cells in the hippocampus was demonstrated over a decade ago. However, hippocampal dynamics resulting from this reactivation remain largely unknown. While calcium imaging is commonly used as measure of neuronal activity, GCaMP, most common indicator, cannot be with optogenetic because both require blue light excitation. To resolve overlap, we demonstrate red-shifted opsin, ChrimsonR. We then conduct dual-color CA1 during DG. In addition to measuring population CA1, tagged original experience were identified. fear-conditioned animals (FC+), nontagged decreased their firing rate stimulation, while maintained activity level. FC+ animals, behavioral effect stimulation across days, so did changes neural stimulation. Our results technical feasibility memory-associated neurons advance our understanding underlying reactivation.

Understanding the physiological mechanisms that modulate memory acquisition and consolidation remains among most ambitious questions in neuroscience. Massive efforts have been dedicated to deciphering how experience affects behavior, different sensory phenomena memory. Our ability encode, consolidate retrieve memories depends on internal drives, sleep stands out processes affect memory: one of relatable benefits is aiding occurs order both prepare brain learn new information, after a learning task, those memories. Drosophila lends itself study interactions between sleep. The fruit fly provides incomparable genetic resources, mapped connectome, an existing framework knowledge molecular, cellular, circuit sleep, making remarkable model decipher sophisticated regulation by quantity quality Research has stablished not only facilitates wild-type memory-impaired animals, but deprivation interferes with In addition, it well-accepted paramount processes. Finally, studies shown can promote drive. Nevertheless, molecular network underlying this intertwined relationship are still evasive. Recent work shed light neural substrates mediate sleep-dependent consolidation. similar way, mechanistic insights switch control sleep-independent strategies were recently described. This review will discuss , focusing recent advances field pointing awaiting be investigated.

Abstract Sleep oscillations provide a key substrate to facilitate memory processing, the underlying mechanism of which may involve overnight homeostatic regulation plasticity at synaptic and whole-network level. However, there remains lack human data demonstrating if how sleep enhances consolidation associated neural homeostasis. We combined intracranial recordings scalp electroencephalography (EEG) in humans reveal new role for rapid eye movement (REM) promoting recalibration optimal excitation/inhibition-balance. Moreover, extent this REM-sleep predicted success consolidation, expressly modulation hippocampal— neocortical excitability favoring remembering rather than forgetting. The findings describe novel, fundamental REM maintaining homeostasis, thereby enhancing long-term memory.

Interoception is the process by which nervous system regulates internal functions to achieve homeostasis. The role of neurons in interoception has received considerable recent attention, but glial cells also contribute. Glial can sense and transduce signals including osmotic, chemical, mechanical status extracellular milieu. Abstract The characteristics of infant sleep change over the first year. Generally, infants wake and move less at night as they grow older. However, acquisition new motor skills leads to temporary increases in waking movement night. Indeed, sleep‐dependent is important for sensorimotor development. Nevertheless, little known about how during changes accrue locomotor experience. current study investigated whether were predicted by infants' walking Seventy‐eight wore an actigraph measure physical activity sleep. Parents reported when their walked across a room >10 feet without stopping or falling. Infants midst skill had worse than age‐group estimate. with more walk experience temporally sporadic steeper hourly increase course Ongoing consolidation may alter state‐dependent memory consolidation. We propose model whereby gross reflect movement‐dependent
