The objective of this study was to validate equipment and procedures involved in implementing the novel object recognition (NOR) paradigm with young pigs. Two experiments were run intent determining improvements original, high-throughput NOR design. focus these impact confounding factors on main cognitive outcome, index (RI). Experiment 1 utilized 13 pigs that all performed task following original addition 2 extra testing days. Results from experiment indicated one test day is sufficient for producing RI values differ (p < 0.05) chance performance, which set at 0.50 given use two objects. also may habituate itself after as not different > days or 3. male 16 female determine sex differences outcomes introducing home-cage enrichment. investigative behaviors despite both sexes chance. enrichment less discernable, but evidence suggests a lack influence. Overall, modifications described herein reduced variability primary RI, thereby improved sensitivity behavioral assay compared paradigm.

Abstract Background Within the last few decades, domestic pig has emerged as an advantageous biomedical animal model due to a vast number of similarities in realms development and neuroanatomical features. Even so, major challenge remains how translate time between human. Previously, researchers have developed Translating Mammalian Time that estimates timing 95 neurodevelopmental events across 9 mammalian species. By identifying these various events, one can include additional into assign unique species score predict post-conception day (PCD) other will occur. Objective Our objective was conduct comprehensive literature review enable chronological comparison species, including humans. Methods A total 30 with corresponding PCDs were identified, then used optimize pig’s using grid search gradient descent approaches. Results Conclusion Across both methods, same 2.157 derived residual sum squares 4260.46. This places cat (1.808) macaque (2.255), thereby reinforcing translational power comparable non-human primates.
