Reliability of nociceptive monitors vs. standard practice during general anesthesia: a prospective observational study

Standards
are
well-established

electrophysiological
methods
but
still
lacking
microneurographic
recordings
peripheral
sensory
nerve
fibers
in
humans.
Developing
a
new
concept
enhance
laboratory
workflows
complex
process.
We
propose
standard
structuring
and
storing
microneurography
metadata
based
on
odML
odML-tables.
Further,
we
present
an
extension
the
odML-tables
GUI
that
enables
user-friendly
search
functionality
database.
With
our
open-source
repository,
encourage
other
labs
incorporate
odML-based
into
their
experimental
routines.

Abstract
Spike
sorting
represents
a
persistent
challenge
in
electrophysiology,
particularly
extracellular
nerve
recordings
containing
signals
from
several
fibers.
This
issue
is
exacerbated
microneurography
peripheral
unmyelinated
afferents
awake
humans,
which
are
responsible
for
pain
sensation.
due
to
the
similarity
of
spike
shapes
originating
different
fibers,
low
signal-to-noise
ratios,
and
shape-distorting
overlaying
signals.
Here,
we
present
first
systematic
assessment
morphology-based
multiple
two
laboratories.
We
created
dedicated
ground
truth
datasets
by
employing
semi-manual
labelling
methods
enabling
comparison
supervised
unsupervised
feature
sets.
A
strong
advantage
approach
was
observed,
while
no
single
set
showed
global
advantage.
Further,
high
diversity
results
linked
per-recording
fiber
number
morphologies.
To
extend
this
problem
microneurography,
our
open-source
pipeline
enables
reproducible
sortability
analysis
any
neuronal
activity
if
electrical
stimulation
fibers
possible.
The
achieved
advancement
lays
foundation
gaining
insights
into
neural
coding
itch
