Ocular light exposure has important influences on human health and well-being through modulation of circadian rhythms sleep, as well neuroendocrine cognitive functions. Prevailing patterns do not optimally engage these actions for many individuals, but advances in our understanding the underpinning mechanisms emerging lighting technologies now present opportunities to adjust promote optimal physical mental performance. A newly developed, international standard provides a SI-compliant way quantifying influence intrinsically photosensitive, melanopsin-expressing, retinal neurons that mediate effects. The report recommendations lighting, based an expert scientific consensus expressed easily measured quantity (melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (melaponic EDI)) defined within this standard. are supported by detailed analysis sensitivity circadian, neuroendocrine, alerting responses ocular provide straightforward framework inform design practice.

Abstract Light‐induced melatonin suppression data from 29 peer‐reviewed publications was analysed by means of a machine‐learning approach to establish which light exposure characteristics (ie photopic illuminance, five α‐opic equivalent daylight illuminances [EDIs], duration and timing the exposure, dichotomous variables pharmacological pupil dilation narrowband source) are main determinants suppression. Melatonin in set dominated four characteristics: (1) melanopic EDI, (2) duration, (3) (4) S‐cone‐opic EDI. A logistic model used evaluate influence each these parameters on response. The final only based first three parameters, since EDI best single (photoreceptor) predictor that outperformed for (photopic) below 21 lux. Beyond vision, light influences human circadian rhythms and buildings' energy consumption. Design solutions are needed to satisfy visual requirements while minimizing lighting demands. By reflecting the incident radiation, inner surfaces influence spatial spectral distribution, affecting achieve task illuminance light-induced response. Here, walls' characteristics' impact on overall luminous environment power demands is analysed in a test room, combining seven colours three sources' correlated colour temperatures (CCTs). Hence, luminaires set meet needs: eye level irradiances measured, responses obtained regarding both stimulus (CS) melanopic equivalent daylight (mel-EDI). It found that parameters higher for highly reflective walls or those most short-wavelength interval, being insufficient proper stimulation according current guidelines. For all colours, highest mel-EDIs occur with 6000 K CCT lowest 3000 CCT. On contrary, CSs generally lower 4000 K. Second, necessary calculated. With warm sources, sufficient CS mel-EDI values achieved similar eye-level illuminance, requiring outputs regardless of wall's colour. In other cases, corresponding = 136 lx much than reach 30%, 250 quite always highest.

However, monitoring light not included current wearable Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, only recently have international standards defined α-opic equivalent daylight illuminance measures for how the eye responds to light. This paper reports sensor node that can be incorporated into IoT provide real-world settings. We present system design, electronic performance testing, accuracy measurements when compared calibrated spectral source. includes consideration directional response sensor, comparison placed on different parts body, demonstration practical use over 7 days. Our device operates 3.5 days between charges, with sampling period 30 s. It has 10 channels measurement, range 415–910 nm, balancing cost considerations. Measured results 13 devices show mean absolute error less than 0.07 log lx, minimum correlation 0.99. These findings demonstrate accurate sensing feasible, including at wrist worn locations. an experimental platform future investigations based lighting control.

Human cognitive functioning shows circadian variations throughout the day. However, individuals largely differ in their timing during day of when they are more capable performing specific tasks and prefer to sleep. These interindividual differences preferred temporal organization sleep daytime activities define chronotype. Since a late chronotype is associated with adverse mental physical consequences, it vital importance study how lighting environments affect Here, we use mathematical model human pacemaker understand light built environment changes distribution population. In line experimental findings, show that spend days relatively dim conditions, this not only results later phase biological clock but also increases angle entrainment timing.
