Individual Differences in Bodily Self-Consciousness and Its Neural Basis

Bodily
self-consciousness
(BSC),
a
subject
of
interdisciplinary
interest,
refers
to
the
awareness
one’s
bodily
states.
Previous
studies
have
noted
existence
individual
differences
in
BSC,
while
neglecting
underlying
factors
and
neural
basis
such
differences.
Considering
that
BSC
relied
on
integration
from
both
internal
external
self-relevant
information,
we
here
review
previous
findings
through
three-level-self
model,
which
includes
interoceptive,
exteroceptive,
mental
self-processing.
The
data
show
cross-level
influenced
involving
signal
perceptibility,
multisensory
processing
principles,
personal
traits
shaped
by
environment,
interaction
modes
integrate
multiple
levels
Furthermore,
interoceptive
processing,
regions
like
anterior
cingulate
cortex
insula
correlations
with
different
perceptions
sensations.
For
exteroception,
parietal
lobe
integrates
sensory
inputs,
coordinating
various
responses.
Mental
self-processing
modulates
areas
medial
prefrontal
cortex.
interactions
between
self-processing,
intraparietal
sulcus
involve
BSC.
We
propose
diverse
experiences
can
be
attributed
moderates
perception
their
body.
Overall,
considering

for
diagnosis
