Nightshift is associated with impaired cognitive performance on many tasks, yet also moderated by individual differences. We investigated the effect of circadian type (two factors: flexible-rigid, and languid-vigour), efficacy a novel countermeasure, breaking up sitting light-intensity physical activity, in context nightshift performance. Thirty-three healthy adults (age M ± SD: 24.3 4.6 y; 19 females) participated sleep laboratory study over five consecutive simulated nightshifts (2200-0600 h). Sleep opportunities occurred at 0800-1700 h. Participants were randomised to sedentary (SIT; n = 14), or "breaking-up" (BREAK; 19) condition. BREAK participants completed 3 min walking every 30 3.2 km/h, while SIT remained seated. Every 2 h during nightshift, Psychomotor Vigilance Task (mean RRT), Stroop Task, Digit Symbol Substitution Task. revised Circadian Type Inventory which categorises individuals rigid-flexible scale languid-vigorous (rigid; 12, flexible; 11; languid; 11, vigorous 13). Linear mixed models showed significant 3-way interaction between Nightshifts (1-5), Condition (SIT, BREAK), flexibility-rigidity for mean RRT (p 0.03) only. Flexible types condition had better than rigid BREAK, SIT, flexible nights, marginally worse first night all apart from SIT. 2-way percentage accuracy task, languid-vigour response time task. Accuracy worsened types, task improved languid nights. No other differences found. Breaking activity maintained sustained attention across experimental nightshifts. Both rigidity languidity trends performance, though whether these have meaningful real-world implications must be explored further. Deprivation of sleep (DS) and its effects on circadian rhythm gene expression are not well understood despite their influence various physiological psychological processes. This study aimed to elucidate the changes in genes following a night DS. Their correlation with architecture physical activity was also examined. The included 81 participants who underwent polysomnography (PSG) DS actigraphy.
