Impact of Wildfires on Cardiovascular Health

Wildfire
smoke
(WFS)
is
a
mixture
of
respirable
particulate
matter,
environmental
gases,
and
other
hazardous
pollutants
that
originate
from
the
unplanned
burning
arid
vegetation
during
wildfires.
The
increasing
size
frequency
recent
wildfires
has
escalated
public
occupational
health
concerns
regarding
WFS
inhalation,
by
either
individuals
living
nearby
downstream
an
active
fire
or
wildland
firefighters
workers
face
unavoidable
exposure
because
their
profession.
In
this
review,
we
first
synthesize
current
evidence
environmental,
controlled,
interventional
human
studies,
to
highlight
positive
associations
between
inhalation
cardiovascular
morbidity
mortality.
Motivated
these
findings,
discuss
preventative
measures
suggest
interventions
mitigate
impact
We
then
review
animal
cell
studies
call
attention
on
pathophysiological
processes
support
deterioration
tissues
organs
in
response
inhalation.
Acknowledging
challenges
integrating
across
independent
sources,
contextualize
laboratory-scale
approaches
according
biological

suggestions

Abstract
Wildfire
smoke
(WFS)
is
an

rapidly

threat

global
health.

season,

little
known
about
the
effects
of
WFS
on

erosion

are
significant
threats
to
most
societies

Abstract
This
study
investigates
the
combustion
behavior,
emissions,
and
aerosol
production
of
four
plant
species:
Laurus
nobilis
,
Cistus
monspeliensis
Photinia
fraseri
Cupressus
sempervirens
.
The
Heat
Release
Rate
(HRR)
Smoke
Production
(SPR)
were
measured,
revealing
that
had
highest
HRR
longest
flame
duration
due
to
its
higher
bulk
density.
Emission
Factors
(EFs)
for
key
compounds
such
as
CO₂,
CO,
NO,
aerosols
showed
significant
variation
by
species.
Aerosol
analysis
indicated
all
plants
primarily
emitted
fine
particles,
with
majority
being
ultrafine
particles
(PM
0.1
),
particularly
in
25–130‐nm
range.
Particle
size
distributions
bimodal
number
but
monomodal
volume.
These
findings
highlight
impact
characteristics
on
fire
behavior
implications
understanding
dynamics
wildland–urban
interfaces.
