variations

cerebral
oxygen
metabolism
during
acute

Eleven
young,
healthy
participants
(26.5
±
4.5
years)
performed
Go/No-Go
task
two
sessions,

which
includes
three
minutes
(FiO2
=
7.7%).
Cerebral
blood
flow
(CBF)
was
assessed
using
pCASL
MRI
one
session,
while
blood-oxygen-level-dependent
(BOLD)
signals
were
acquired

Fractional

normoxia

Introduction
Reduced
environmental
oxygen
levels
at
high
altitudes
can
result
in
hypoxic
hypoxia,
which
remains
a
primary
threat
tactical
aviation.
Hypoxia
broadly
impairs
cognition
and
degrade
pilot's
ability
to
safely
operate
the
aircraft.
Current
hypoxia
countermeasures
include
aircraft
life
support
systems
that
deliver
supplemental
using
controlled
exposures
train
aviators
recognize
symptoms.
To
maximize
effectiveness
of
these
countermeasures,
it
is
critical
understand
how
impacts
performance
associated
neurocognitive
outcomes.
We
previously
showed
neural
marker
indexes
sensory
processing
integrity
sensitive
impairment.
Methods
Here,
we
extend
this
line
research
closer
training
environment
by
simulation
equipment
currently
standard
aviation
survival
training.
In
single-blind,
repeated-measures,
counterbalanced
design,
exposed
34
healthy
participants
either
normoxic
air
(ground
level)
or
normobaric
(altitude
equivalent
gradually
increasing
from
10
25k')
for
20
min
after
baseline
ground
level.
During
exposure,
completed
cognitive
assessment
battery
while
passively
elicited
responses
auditory
tones
were
recorded
electroencephalography
(EEG).
Participants
reported
their
symptoms
throughout
upon
completion
exposures.
Results
found
exposure
rapidly
predicted
physiological
peripheral
saturation
(decrease)
heart
rate
(increase)
within
2–3
minutes
onset.
On
average,
delayed

Abstract
Hypoxia
elicits
a
multitude
of
tissue
responses
depending
on
the
severity
and
duration
exposure.
While
chronic
hypoxia
is
shown
to
impact
development,
regeneration,
cancer,
understanding
threats
acute
(i.e.,
short‐term)
limited
mainly
due
its
transient
nature.
Here,
novel
gelatin‐dextran
(Gel‐Dex)
hydrogel
established
that
decouples
formation
oxygen
consumption
thus
facilitates
3D
sprouting
from
endothelial
spheroids
and,
subsequently,
induces
“on‐demand.”
The
Gel‐Dex
platform
rapidly
achieves
moderate
hypoxic
conditions
without
compromising
mechanical
properties.
Acute
exposure
leads
increased
cell
migration
proliferation,
promoting
total
length
number
vascular
sprouts.
This
work
finds
enhanced
angiogenic
response
mediated
by
reactive
species,
independently
hypoxia‐inducible
factors.
Reactive
species‐dependent
matrix
metalloproteinases
activity
observed
following
hypoxia.
Overall,
offers
study
how
“on‐demand”
impacts
angiogenesis,
with
broad
applicability
development
sensing
technologies.
