Reduced ATP turnover during hibernation in relaxed skeletal muscle

Abstract
Hibernating
brown
bears,
due
to
a
drastic
reduction
in
metabolic
rate,
show
only
moderate
muscle
wasting.
Here,
we
evaluate
if
ATPase
activity
of
resting
skeletal
myosin
can
contribute
this
energy
sparing.
By
analyzing
single
fibers
taken
from
the
same
either
during
hibernation
or
summer,
find
that
hibernating
bears
have
mild
decline
force
production
and
significant
activity.
Single
fiber
proteomics,
western
blotting,
immunohistochemical
analyses
reveal
major
remodeling
mitochondrial
proteome
hibernation.
Furthermore,
using
bioinformatical
approaches
blotting
phosphorylated
light
chain,
known
stimulator
basal
activity,
is
decreased
disused
muscles.
These
results
suggest
limits
loss
by
reducing
indicating
possible
role
for
modulation
multiple
wasting
conditions.

Abstract
The
genus
Myotis
is
one
of
the
largest
clades
bats,
and
exhibits
some
most
extreme
variation
in
lifespans
among
mammals
alongside
unique
adaptations
to
viral
tolerance
immune
defense.
To
study
evolution
longevity-associated
traits
infectious
disease,
we
generated
near-complete
genome
assemblies
cell
lines
for
8
closely
related
species
.
Using
genome-wide
screens
positive
selection,
analyses
structural
variation,
functional
experiments
primary
lines,
identify
new
patterns
adaptation
contributing
longevity,
cancer
resistance,
interactions
bats.
We
find
that
bats
have
significant
risk
across
demonstrate
a
DNA
damage
response
cells
long-lived
M.
lucifugus
also
evidence
abundant
viruses
-
but
not
RNA
other
sharp
contrast
with
mammals,
potentially
role
as
reservoirs
zoonoses.
Together,
our
results

genomics

Abstract
Hibernation
is
a
fascinating
physiological
phenomenon
that
dramatically
reduces
basal
metabolism
and
thermogenesis,
resulting
in
large
deviation
body
temperature
(Tb)
from
homeothermic
ranges
mammals.
Although
high-resolution
long-term
Tb
recording
wild
or
laboratory
animals
has
become
possible
through
data
loggers,
few
standardized
methods
to
analyze
details
of
hibernation
patterns
are
available,
making
it
difficult
reproduce
compare
the
results
across
different
studies
species.
To
facilitate
analysis
accelerate
research,
we
developed
an
open-source
program,
tools
measurement
interpretation
(TOHMIN).
As
proof
concept,
analyzed
dataset
two
pilot
on

Torpor
