Co-contamination by heavy metal and organic pollutant may negatively influence plant performance, increasing the number of genotypes for a population reduce this negative effect. To test hypothesis, we constructed experimental populations Hydrocotyle vulgaris consisting single, four or eight in soils contaminated cadmium, cypermethrin both. Biomass, leaf area stem internode length H. were significantly lower soil both cadmium than only. A reverse pattern was found specific area. In general, genotypic richness its interaction with contamination did not growth morphology. However, nutrients varied response to richness. Moreover, positively correlated total nitrogen, but potassium matter. We conclude that co-contamination suppress compared only, play little role regulating these effects.

Biodiversity plays important roles in ecosystem functions and genetic diversity is a key component of biodiversity. While effects on have been extensively documented, no study has tested how plants influences greenhouse gas fluxes from plant-soil systems. We assembled experimental populations consisting 1, 4 or 8 genotypes the clonal plant Hydrocotyle vulgaris microcosms, measured CO2 CH4 microcosms. The equivalent microcosms with 1-genotype H. were significantly lower than those 4- 8-genotype populations, such an effect increased increasing growth period. cumulative flux was negatively related to populations. However, genotypic did not affect CH4. conclude that can influence findings highlight importance regulating fluxes.
