Abstract Purpose Public safety personnel, including first responders, are regularly exposed to physical, social, and psychological risks occupational requirements. These requirements extend beyond the employee may also impact families (for example, work-family conflict, compassion fatigue). Despite recent attention directed at population’s wellness, considerably less is towards family. This review investigates how associated with these occupations affect families’ lives experiences, correspondingly, respond adapt risks. Methods In current qualitative review, we sought identify describe lifestyle experiences of public as they navigate work. The inclusion criteria resulted in an analysis 18 articles, representing only police ( n = 11), paramedics 7), firefighting 10) sectors. Results We identified described both by occupation familial role. Shared themes across groups included ‘Worry’, ‘Communication’, ‘Where do I turn’, ‘Are okay’, ‘Serving alongside’, ‘(Over)Protective’. However, distinct emerged between different family configurations. Themes prevalent amongst primarily children included: ‘Let’s Laugh Instead’, ‘(Over)Protective’, ‘I’m not Police, my Parent is!’. Experiences differed if contained on serving personnel or multiple. Conclusion shared unique families. normalizes emphasizes need develop initiatives improve well-being employees.
