The Role of Early Maternal Cultural Orientation on Spanish‐English Child‐Directed Speech and Vocabulary Knowledge in Mexican‐American Children DOI

Cultural contexts shape numerous child development outcomes and may be particularly salient for dual language learning children who experience heritage societal cultures. Previous research suggests that caregivers' cultural orientation is associated with the their exposed to knows. However, less known about how caregiver linked early child-directed speech knowledge in immigrant households. In a sample of primarily Spanish-speaking, Mexican mothers (N = 112; 58.9% female) from low-income households, this study examined links between maternal Anglo at age 9 months, Spanish English (measured via mother-child free-play) 2 years, children's vocabulary 3 years. A path model revealed predicted through speech. Although vocabulary, did not predict or scores. The findings implicate acculturation societal- heritage-language as important features consider when assessing immigrants' environments learning, making role on childhood bilingualism.

Historically, Chinese societies have been characterized by patriarchal structures (Confucianism and filial piety) that assign distinct roles to men women within the family unit. These norms typically dictate take on primary responsibility for childcare household duties, while are expected be breadwinners.
