Time matters for mental health: a systematic review of quantitative studies on time perspective in psychiatric populations

Purpose
of
review
The
ability
to
perform
mental
time
travels
and
develop
representations
the
past,
present,
future
is
one
distinctive
capacities

review,
biases

Introduction
Poor
mentalization,
or
lack
of
capacity
to
reflect
on
self
and
others
in
terms
mental
states,
thoughts,
feelings,
time
perspective
biases
were
both
related
disorders
lower
wellbeing

Expanding
one
prior
study,
we
examined
the
relationship
mentalization
perspective,
including
a
measure
known
as
deviations
from
balanced
(DBTP)
that
summarizes
across
past,
present,
future
frames.
Method
A
convenience
sample
258
participants
responded
version
Reflective
Functioning
Questionnaire
(RFQ-8)
six-dimensional
Zimbardo
Time
Perspective
Inventory
(S-ZTPI).
Given
recent
evidence
original
two-factor
structure
RFQ
may
need
be
reconsidered,
used
confirmatory
factor
analyses
(CFA)
compare
alternative
models
for
first
step.
Results
In
line
with
several
studies,
CFA
favored
unitary
model
RFQ-8
reflecting
hypomentalization
(or
uncertainty).
The
total
score
showed
significant
associations
Past
Negative,
Present
Fatalistic,
Future
Negative
dimensions
S-ZTPI,
while
was
negatively
associated
Positive.
Of
major
interest,
DBTP
strong
positive
correlation
(
r
=
0.64
latent
constructs;
