Psychobiotics Ameliorate Depression and Anxiety Status in Surgical Oncology Patients: Results from the ProDeCa Study

Background:
Psychological
disorders
are
prevalent
in
patients
having
undergone
gastrointestinal
cancer
surgery,
and
their
emotional
status
may
further
deteriorate
during
subsequent
chemotherapy.
Psychobiotics
specific
probiotics
that
have
the
unique
characteristics
of
producing
neuroactive
substances
thought
to
act
on
brain-gut
axis.
The
aim
present
study
was
evaluate
benefits
a
psychobiotic
formula
depression
anxiety
status,
as
well
perceived
stress,
versus
placebo
chemotherapy
course
following
surgery
for
cancer.

Background:
Discharge
against
medical
advice
(DAMA)
disrupts
continuity
of
care
and
is
associated
with
increased
readmission
rates,
morbidity,
mortality.

studied

general
hospital
populations,

prevalence

patients,

treatment
adherence

outcomes,

underexplored.
Methods:
This
multicenter,
cross-sectional
study
analyzed
anonymized
data
from
the
IQVIA
database,
including
patients
hospitalized
36
German
hospitals
between
January
2019
December
2023.
Multivariate
logistic
regression
assessed
associations
DAMA

as
age,
sex,
type,
metastases,
comorbidities.
Results:

51,505
occurred
0.9%
hospitalizations.

highest
rates
were
observed
