The role and responsibility of universities in supporting student mental health has been the subject high-profile legal debate. Drawing on a thematic analysis twelve semi-structured focus groups conducted during Student Minds UK University Mental Health Charter consultations, this paper elucidates experiences, perceptions, practices 75 staff working within services to support health, with aim clarifying implications for responsibilities whole university approach. Participants described being ‘stretched at both ends’ response significant ongoing increase overall demand complexity presentation, further compounded by capacity challenges public services. Despite care commitment staff, these conditions compromise effectiveness, safety, accessibility As result, students increasingly present academic settings, multiplying risk themselves, their peers, universities, whilst negatively impacting learning process.
