This study investigated the role of fish in addressing food and nutrition security challenges Southern Africa, focusing on 10 countries including Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, South Africa. It examined current state security, production, consumption patterns. Additionally, opportunities to enhance production these thereby enhancing security. The findings revealed persistent such as a high prevalence insecurity malnutrition throughout region. Fish is hindered by overexploitation fishery resources, inadequate fisheries management, susceptibility climate-related shocks, limited investments aquaculture, access input supplies quality seed feed. Despite obstacles, exist promote sustainable nutrition. Countries endowed with extensive coastlines inland waters exhibit significant potential for development, while landlocked nations are increasingly exploring aquaculture viable solution. Addressing capitalizing requires comprehensive governance, technological innovation, policy interventions, investment ensure sustainability resilience industries

The prospect of using fallowing as an ecosystem management measure to restore functions in disturbed aquatic environments under cage culture was evaluated this study. aquaculture site the Southeast arm Lake Malawi studied following abandonment activities 2022 after 18 years operation. A Hydrolab CTD MS5 series probe cast at each station a maximum depth collect electronic data and provide situ profiles temperature, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, pH salinity. Chlorophyl-extraction done mixture acetone methanol analyzed on turner 10 fluorometer. study found that physical-chemical parameters such pH, ammonia, turbidity were not significantly different (p > 0.05) across non-cage sites between seasons. However, ammonia levels recorded lower than values reported during operations period, indication some recovery processes are happening site. Chlorophyl level be insignificantly higher 0.0.5) season < 0.05). High Chl-a observed independent but might linked external inputs associated with tributaries they collectively drain into lake. directly correlated followed by total suspended solids pH. Overall, is undergoing respect abandonment, effect masked nutrients Lake. Although confirmed oligotrophic status lake, increasing alarming calls for inclusion watershed agriculture environmental programming sustainably safeguard health
