The black soldier fly ( Hermetia illucens ) is a saprophagous insect known for bioconverting organic waste, potentially offering environmental benefits, such as contributing to waste reduction and nutrient cycling. performance of larvae varies significantly with factors substrate moisture, larval density, scale production. Three experiments were conducted using mix spent mushroom (SMS) chicken feed (CF). In the first experiment, 250 reared on 100 g dry matter (DM) at moisture levels 65–75%. Results showed that average individual weight, total biomass, conversion ratio (FCR) improved increased moisture. second 300 350 larvae/box tested 70% 75% highest fresh weight (158.6 mg) was observed larvae, while biomass achieved larvae. Finally, different scales (10–2,500 25–6,500 larvae) similar feeding rate. recorded scale, no clear correlation between scale. However, 50 (33.2%). Overall, this study underscores need adjust efficiency when SMS, CF or other diets. optimal results SMS per DM, approximately 2 cm .

Praying mantises are known for their striking predatory behavior and becoming increasingly popular with hobbyists scientific research. As generalist predators a wide range of insect-based diets, it is crucial to identify suitable prey options, especially restricted environments such as terrariums, which limited compared the wild. This study investigates use adult black soldier flies (BSF; Hermetia illucens; Linnaeus, 1758) sole food source two mantis species, Chlidonoptera lestoni (Roy & Leston, 1975) Hierodula patellifera (Serville, 1839), while assessing suitability potential challenges associated digestion. The BSF widely recognized its high nutritional value ease rearing, making an attractive candidate mantises. Although natural capture feed acceptance have been observed, seem not be both Our results suggest that imbalances in macronutrients, particularly protein/fat ratio, may contribute mortality. mono-diet could also limit access variety beneficial microorganisms essential maintaining healthy gut microbiota mantises, thereby affecting immunity well-being captivity. In addition, possible presence pathogenic affected mantises' survival. Future studies should focus on adjustment BSF, chemical composition strongly dependent they reared on.

Rearing black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) in order to utilize biogenic materials is of increasing interest the context sustainable animal production. However, little known about amino acid (AA) requirements this species. Therefore, a feeding experiment with BSFL was conducted, which lysine, methionine, cysteine, arginine, phenylalanine, or histidine reduced by 65% methionine increased 65%. Reductions single AAs substrate did not negatively impact growth, while addition improved growth performance, indicating that limiting nutritional factor for maximal productivity. Differences dietary AA profiles had no on profile biomass. balance calculations individual indicated microbiome capable synthesizing and balancing those microbial protein synthesis. While both utilized all free AAs, suggesting supplemental can be effective additives production, synthesis avoided negative performance impacts provoked severe reductions. The quantification these effects suggested could add up 35% overall supply overcome deficiency. This effect may necessarily ensure productivity, as demonstrated extra substrate. Our research nutrition should consider interactions between composition activity.

ABSTRACT Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have attracted attention due to their ability upcycle various biological side streams into valuable biomass, such as proteins, lipids, and chitin. In this study, we investigated the impact of high-fiber diets on larval growth performance shift microbes in gut. We tested empty fruit bunches (EFB), potato pulp (PP), cottonseed press cake (CPC), with chicken feed (CF) used a control diet. found that reared EFB, PP, CPC were smaller than at end development low nutritional value diets. However, survival rates more 90% observed regardless cultivation-dependent approach analyze microbial community gut BSFL, isolated, identified total 329 bacterial strains. Bacillaceae most frequently isolated from EFB These isolates predicted degrade cellulose silico was subsequently confirmed vitro using Congo Red assay. Whereas members Enterobacteriaceae Morganellaceae mostly guts high-protein CF. conclude microbiome plays crucial role digestion fiber-rich plant organic material, thereby enabling BSFL successfully complete life cycle also substrates value. As result, convert industrial reducing waste promoting sustainability. IMPORTANCE Organic industries pose challenge environment. They are often present huge amounts discarded, incinerated, for biogas production, or ruminant animals. Many plant-based contain difficult-to-digest fiber well anti-nutritional even insecticidal compounds could harm challenges can be addressed black larvae, which known them biomass. This will help mitigate agro-industrial via efficient management contribute economical sustainable farming insects.

Abstract Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is a by-product remaining after harvesting mushrooms. We evaluated the effect of substituting chicken feed with 0–100% Pleurotus eryngii and Lentinula edodes SMS at different stocking densities (200–1000 larvae/box) on development, composition, reduction black soldier fly ( Hermetia illucens ) larvae. Although survival rate was not significantly different, feeding pure led to low growth rate. The substitution level negatively correlated individual larval weight, total harvested biomass, (LGR), conversion ratio (FCR), reduction, waste index (WRI) except for 20% substitution. Feeding 40% resulted in highest number prepupae. In density experiment, heaviest larvae (220–239 mg fresh weight) were obtained 200 larvae/box 0% group. frass residue FCR decreased increased density. Remarkably, when 250 larvae/box, LGR, did differ from control, whereas some higher deterioration. fact, residue, WRI even improved chemical analyses reared showed comparable ash fat contents protein content compared Accordingly, up standard diet such as can be replaced by low-cost without disadvantages breeding.

Black soldier fly (BSF) larvae ( Hermetia illucens ) serve as a valuable protein source for animal feed. Limiting factors in the industrial rearing of BSF are reproduction process and egg output. Studies indicate potential to shorten preoviposition time increase output through better utilization environmental variables, such temperature light, settings. Excessive stimulation, however, can lead stress, elevated production costs, reduced numbers, emphasizing need delicate balance. This study addresses these challenges by investigating controlled manipulation variables stimulate mating enhance production, thereby developing comprehensive model encompassing adult life cycle, mating, production. Model parameters were fitted using literature data, model’s plausibility was tested simulations. Using optimal control methods, calculated dynamic trajectories when compared standard approach constant environment demonstrated higher shorter cycles at reasonable energy costs. Applications this model-based optimization various scenarios, highlighting practical utility versatility developed model. contributes insights improving practices offering advancements efficiency overall sustainability.
