Conventional farming practices can lead to soil degradation and a decline in productivity. Regenerative agriculture (RA) is purported by advocates as solution these issues that focuses on health carbon sequestration. The fundamental principles of RA are keep the covered, minimise disturbance, preserve living roots year round, increase species diversity, integrate livestock, limit or eliminate use synthetic compounds (such herbicides fertilisers). overall objectives rejuvenate land provide environmental, economic, social benefits wider community. Despite RA, vast majority growers reluctant adopt due lack empirical evidence claimed profitability. We examined reported mechanisms associated with against available scientific data. literature suggests agricultural such minimum tillage, residue retention, cover cropping improve carbon, crop yield, certain climatic zones types. Excessive chemicals biodiversity loss ecosystem degradation. Combining livestock agroforestry same landscape several co-benefits. However, vary among different agroecosystems may not necessarily be applicable across multiple agroecological regions. Our recommendation implement rigorous long-term system trials compare conventional order build knowledge regional scales. This will policy-makers an base from which make informed decisions about adopting realise their economic achieve resilience climate change.

Land-use changes (LUC), primarily due to deforestation and soil disturbance, are one of the major causes quality degradation greenhouse gas emissions. Effects LUC on physicochemical properties in land use management strategies that can effectively restore carbon microbial biomass levels have been reported from all over world, but impact analysis such practices Indian context is limited. In this study, 1,786 paired datasets (for meta-analysis) uses (LUs) were collected literature (1990–2019) determine magnitude influence carbon, biomass, other physical chemical at three depths. Meta-analysis results showed grasslands (36.1%) lost most organic (SOC) compared native forest lands, followed by plantation lands (35.5%), cultivated (31.1%), barren (27.3%), horticulture (11.5%). Our findings also revealed that, when land, quotient was lower LUs. Due depletion SOC stock, dioxide equivalent (CO 2 eq) emissions significantly higher LUs than land. Results conversion total labile non-labile stocks 21%, 25%, 32%, 26%, 41.2%, respectively. Changes pools more pronounced surface (0–15 cm) soils subsurface (15–30 cm 30–45 cm). Restoration different ranged a minimum 2% (grasslands) maximum 48% (plantation lands). Overall, study decreased as transitioned forestland LUs, it suggested adopting crop-production systems reduce CO intensive ones evaluated here could contribute improvements mitigation climate change impacts, particularly under agro-climatic conditions.

Over the past decade, scientific studies have increasingly concentrated on effects of global phosphorus (P) scarcity food security. A comprehensive strategy that considers demand reduction and recycling possibilities is needed to address P scarcity. Reduced tillage along with crop residue retention could decrease fixation in soil, improve labile content enhance organic-P (Po) buildup its mineralization by phosphatases; this be an extra benefit conservation agriculture (CA) soils. To study impact long-term CA soil organic inorganic fractions their distribution, a field trial was conducted under maize-based cropping system different (zero (ZT), permanent bed (PB) conventional till (CT) (maize–wheat–mungbean (MWMb), maize–chickpea–sesbania (MCS), maize–mustard–mungbean (MMuMb) maize–maize–sesbania (MMS)). Phosphorus dynamics were studied through sequential fractionation (organic P) at 0–5 5–15 cm depth. The findings showed higher amount soluble loosely bound (SL-P) detected ZT among fractions, whereas iron-bound (Fe-P), aluminum-bound (Al-P), reductant (RES-P) calcium-bound (Ca-P) found CT both depths. Among Organic-P moderately non-labile Po PB but, case Po, it insignificant respect operations. Significant synergistic winter legume (chickpea) summer legumes (sesbania mungbean) rotation observed SL-P, Labile Humic acid-Po, Alkaline phosphatase MBP Given potential relevance understanding for efficient management practices, our offers critical new insight sustainable development.

Soil degradation is widespread in smallholder agrarian communities across the globe where limited resource farmers struggle to overcome poverty and malnutrition. This review lays out scientific basis practical management options for an ecologically based approach sustainably managing soil fertility, with particular attention subsistence systems. We seek change trajectory of development programs that continue promote inorganic fertilizers other high input strategies constrained smallholders, despite ample evidence this falling short food security goals contributing degradation. Ecological nutrient (ENM) agroecological biogeochemical cycles govern ecosystem services fertility. The portfolio ENM extends beyond reliance on guided by following five principles: (1) Build organic matter reserves. (2) Minimize size N P pools are most susceptible loss. (3) Maximize agroecosystem capacity use soluble, P. (4) Use functional phylogenetic biodiversity minimize bare fallows maximize presence growing plants. (5) Construct field scale mass balances track net flows over multiple seasons. Strategic increases spatial temporal plant species diversity a core tactic expands multifunctionality meet priorities restoration crop yields. Examples practices include functionally designed polycultures, diversified rotations, reduced fallow periods, increased legumes, integrated crop-livestock production, variety amendments. These foster accrual function, both which underpin resilience. When first implemented, short-term yield outcomes variable; however, long-term, systems employ can increase yields, stability, profitability security. rests solid foundation science, many barriers imposed current agricultural policies, successful being promoted some actors used farmers, promising results.

Soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in soil functions that are crucial for sustainable agriculture. Understanding how agricultural management and properties affect SOM different depths would aid maintaining increasing throughout the profile. We sampled a 24 year-old cultivation field experiment with conventional cropping systems, adjacent unmanaged meadow to 70 cm depth assess total carbon (OC) stocks distribution of OC into mineral-associated (MAOM), particulate (POM) dissolved (DOM) matter. found >83% was MAOM fraction, across MAOM, POM DOM within not strongly affected by management. Largest (169 t ha−1) together largest plant root biomass meadow, which highlights potential deep-rooting plants sequestering soil. The saturation state assessed based on clay ratio Hassink's Equation (Hassink 1997). seemed underestimate accrual capacity these soils thus overestimated state, whereas indicated all depths, except topsoil. These varying results suggest applied metric should be type -depth specific. also determined contribution content aluminum iron oxides explaining amount OC, MAOM-C POM-C. In contrast oxides, well correlated any fractions below 20 depth, suggesting estimating deeper texture alone. Our indicate can play transporting stabilizing
