Liquidambar species are rich sources of essential oils, with applications in cosmetics, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals. Traditionally, the industrial utilization oil has focused on extraction from resin, while full potential their leaf-derived oils remains underexplored. This study systematically compares composition, sensory characteristics, aroma profiles leaves various species, including hybrid sweetgum, using headspace solid-phase microextraction combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). A precise internal standard method was conducted to identify progenies exhibiting heterosis volatile content a sweetgum population 110 full-sib progenies. total 44 compounds were identified, monoterpenes (α-pinene, β-pinene, d-limonene) dominating styraciflua, formosana orientalis exhibited unique d-Camphene-rich profile. Hybrid found, several significantly exceeding average level. Sensory analysis, odor activity value (OAV) calculations, revealed species-specific profiles: L. styraciflua characterized by citrus/herbaceous notes (high d-limonene OAV = 11.07), whereas pungent camphoraceous tones (d-camphene 15.9). Multivariate analyses identified eight key high variable influence projection (VIP > 1). highlights as promising genetic resource for yield, seven elite showing potential. The distinct particularly d-camphene dominance orientalis, underscore genus-wide metabolic diversity.
