We analyzed 474 human casualties in wildlife-vehicle accidents (WVAs) that occurred between 2002 and 2022 Lithuania, which is a small northern European country. The study revealed the escalating trend of WVAs, since 2018 surpassing other transport accidents, although number per WVA was ca. 100 times lower compared to accidents. Moose primary contributor, responsible for 66.7% fatalities 47.2% injuries, despite much species abundance roe deer, main involved WVAs without casualties. Temporal patterns highlighted seasonal, daily, hourly variations, with majority occurring during dusk or dawn May September, on weekends, 20:00 22:00. Spatially, roads high traffic density exhibited highest unit length. Most after hitting an animal directly cars motorcycles being most vulnerable vehicles. effectiveness prevention measures inconclusive: 9.5% 1.4% injuries were registered area warning sign, 10.4% all fenced road segments. These findings suggest need critical evaluation current strategies reducing associated WVAs.

From April 2016 to the end of July 2024, roadkill mammals were recorded using road sampling method on 33.4 km-long Zmajevac-Osijek in Osijek-Baranja County, located northeastern part Croatia. A total 86 specimens wild mammals, classified into eight species and one subspecies, recorded. The northern white-breasted hedgehog, Erinaceus roumanicus, topped list with 38 individuals, followed by European badger, Meles meles, 23 red fox, Vulpes vulpes, 13 individuals. badger was most frequent February March. hedgehog common June July, while fox October. average number per km road, divided nine sections, ranged from 1.1 5.9. Spearman’s correlation coefficient between length section showed a moderate correlation. only strong positive traffic (average annual daily or summer traffic) for State Road D-212.

This review synthesizes historical and contemporary research on wildlife–vehicle collisions roadkill, outlining its evolution from early documentation to modern road ecology. It discusses how efforts in North America Europe that quantified animal casualties developed standardized methodologies formed current studies use advanced geospatial tools, citizen science, artificial intelligence analyze spatiotemporal patterns. We examine key ecological, methodological, economic impacts of roadkill wildlife populations human safety, highlighting the role density, vehicle speed, seasonal factors. The framework presented also underscores a commitment sustainability by integrating environmental conservation with infrastructural development socio-economic resilience. details various mitigation strategies, fencing crossings dynamic signage, evaluates their effectiveness reducing mortality rates, thereby supporting sustainable transportation infrastructure management. identifies gaps outlines future directions, advocating for integrated, multidisciplinary approaches improve conservation, planning, public awareness context rapidly expanding networks.

Understanding the spatial and temporal patterns of animal road mortality is important for planning protective measures raising driver awareness. In our study Lithuania, spanning from 2002 to 2022, we examined these based on types categorized them by working days, weekends, long predicting potential impact transitioning a four-day week. We found that type explains 22–50% variability in roadkill numbers moose, red deer, wild boar, roe deer. The highest occurrences were main roads, while regional roads had fewest incidents. overall number roadkills, especially those involving ungulates, was followed workdays, with least weekends. However, variations lacked statistical significance, their effect size small. also observed trend increased day before, first day, notably All Saints Day, or last this context, introduction work week, are only expecting move Friday Thursday.

A review of 113 scientific and other publications on the smallest most abundant deer in Lithuania, roe (Capreolus capreolus), is presented, along with an analysis based compound annual population growth rates numbers, hunting bags, roadkill. This covers species’ history country from last glaciation onwards, changes numbers 1934 to 2023, bag 1965 2022, roadkill 2002 data reproduction, habitat selection, genetic diversity, pathogens, damage forest stands. It also provides overview species management selection for trophies. Despite exponential increase since 1990 dominance this roadkill, even urban roads, number density animals they cause stands are relatively low compared European countries. Within observed period, drops were related harsh winters 1969/1970 1995/1996. Poaching, especially coinciding weakened enforcement during period political–economic transition early 1990s, has had a negative impact as have recent increases large predators. Population over does not correlate mortality, which remained stable at average 16.9% 2002.
