Ruminants

chain,
but
are
also
considered
contributors
of
greenhouse
gas
(GHG)
emissions
.
Essential
oils
(EOs)
emerging
as
natural
feed
additives
ruminants'
nutrition
to
enhance
animal
health,
performance
and
reduce
environmental
footprint.
Among
EOs,
lemongrass
(Cymbopogon
winterianus)
oregano
(Origanum
vulgare)
EOs
(LEO
OEO)
have
attracted
attention
modulators
ruminal
fermentations,
their
needs
be
clarified.
The
experiment
was
designed
using
randomised
setup
assess
effects
LEO
OEO
on
vitro
fermentation
GHGs,
total
mixed
ration
(TMR)
substrate
(incubation
time
24h).
Experimental
treatments
included
(doses
%
TMR
DM
basis):
1)
control
only
(0%
EOs)
2)
0.07%
3)
4)
0.035%
+
5)
OEO.
Each
treatment
repeated
three
times
two
experimental
runs.
Only
EO
combinations
reduced
(−9%,
p=0.001).
All
decreased
CO2
by
−5
−12%
with
no
significant
differences
between
(p<0.001),
although
anti-methanogenic
were
not
observed
(p=0.192).
Volatile
fatty
acids
slightly
affected
blend
at
highest
dose,
resulting
reduction
propionate
(−1.3%,
p=0.02),
an
increase
acetate:propionate
(+0.16%,
p=0.04)
isovalerate
(+0.7%,
p=0.03).
pH
(−0.6%,
p=0.004),
while
increased
oxidation
capacity
(+4.2%,
both
parameters
remained
within
physiological
ranges.

ABSTRACT
The
aim
