Ophthalmic Formulations for the Treatment of Allergic Conjunctivitis and Their Effect on the Ocular Surface: A Review of Safety and Tolerability Assessments in Clinical Trials

Allergic
conjunctivitis
(AC)
is
the
most
common
allergic
eye
disorder.
Antiallergic
eyedrops
are
first
line
of
pharmacological
treatment.
However,
application
antiallergic
can
potentially
alter
tear
homeostasis
and
affect
ocular
surface,
which
may
result
in
iatrogenic
diseases
such
as
dye
disease
(DED).
Long-term
treatment
AC
with
containing
preservatives
other
components
increase
risk
DED
surface
damage.
Here,
we
examined
20
clinical
trials
published
during
past
ten
years
antihistamine
ophthalmic
formulations
AC,
to
evaluate
extent
evidence
about
their
safety
tolerability.
Remarkably,
find
that
lack
an
evaluation
critical
parameters,
film
break-up
time,
volume,
corneal
conjunctival
damage,
inflammation,
properly
assess
state
after
prolonged
