The science of telomeres and telomerase has made tremendous progress in recent decades. In this review, we consider it first a historical context (the Carrel-Hayflick-Olovnikov-Blackburn chain discoveries) then review current knowledge telomere structure dynamics norm pathology. Central to the are consequences shortening, including position effects, DNA damage signaling, increased genetic instability. Cell senescence role length its development discussed separately.
