However, research suggests that PPD may be distinct diagnosis. The goal of this study was to summarize the similarities and differences between MDD by synthesizing current on diagnosis concerning different clinical features give directions for improving practice. To lay groundwork narrative review, several databases were searched using general search phrases its components When compared MDD, peripartum exhibits characteristics. manifests variety symptoms, i.e., more anxiety, psychomotor obsessive thoughts, impaired concentration, fatigue loss energy, but less sad mood suicidal ideation, MDD. Although prevalence rates are comparable, there greater cross-cultural variances PPD. Additionally, has some risk factors mechanisms such ovarian tissue expression, premenstrual syndrome, unintended pregnancy, obstetric complications. There need in-depth comparing entire postpartum year. diagnostic criteria should modified, particularly (i) addition specific symptoms (i.e., anxiety), (ii) specifier extending first year following (iii) change either "pregnancy onset" "postpartum onset". Diagnostic further discussed.

Women show a heightened risk for psychosis in midlife that is not observed men. The menopausal transition (i.e. perimenopause) and accompanying changes ovarian hormones are theorized to account this increase risk. This narrative review aims empirically examine these theories by reviewing studies of perimenopausal women potential hormone mechanisms effects. Clinical pre-clinical examining the effects age, stage, across adulthood on were identified. Synthesis body work revealed peak ages overlap with age range key stages (especially transition), although directly assessing stage lacking. Studies have almost exclusively focused earlier developmental events (e.g. pregnancy, menstrual cycle) increases psychotic symptoms female rats during periods lower estradiol levels. Estrogen treatment also tends enhance neuroleptics females species at various reproductive phases. Initial data promising suggesting role However, critical gaps our knowledge base remain, as there tendency rely indirect proxy measures status hormones.
