Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a health emergency worldwide due to its high prevalence and the lack of specific therapies. Noninvasive biomarkers supporting NAFLD diagnosis are urgently needed. Liver mitochondrial dysfunction central pathomechanism that changes throughout progression. Blood-cell bioenergetics reflecting organ emerging for potential applications in diagnostics. We measured real-time respirometry peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), anthropometric parameters, routine analytes, circulating cytokines from cohort patients (N = 19) non-NAFLD control subjects 18). PBMC basal respiration, ATP-linked maximal spare respiratory capacity were significantly reduced compared cases. Correlation plots applied visualize relationships between known or NAFLD-related biomarkers, while non-parametric methods identify which predictors. Basal respiration negatively correlated with triglycerides fasting insulin levels HOMA index. Maximal IL-6 levels. All parameters positively HDL-cholesterol level propose including cell panels diagnostic monitor progression response current novel therapies, mitochondrial-targeted ones.
