Exploratory analysis of the professional quality of life in an Italian radiotherapy department: The role of empathy and alexithymia

Purpose:
Professional
quality
of
life
(QoL)
is
crucial
for
healthcare
workers
as
it
affects
performance
at
work
and
interaction
with
patients,
but
little
known
about
stressors
influencing
radiation
oncology
professionals.
The
present
study
aims
to
explore
the
professional
QoL
oncologists
(ROs)
therapists
(RTTs)
in
an
Italian
radiotherapy
department
report
data
possible
impact
personality
factors,
such
alexithymia
empathy.
Material
methods:
Participants
filled
out
three
validated
questionnaires
measuring
QoL,
alexithymia,
empathy:
(i)
Quality
Life
Scale
(ProQOL);
(ii)
Toronto
Alexithymia
(TAS-20);
(iii)
Interpersonal
Reactivity
Index
(IRI).
Correlation,
regression
analyses
non-parametric
tests
were
run.
Results:
A
total
48
professionals
completed
survey
(66.7%
ROs,
33.3%
RTTs).
Considering
ProQOL
dimensions,
moderate
levels
risk
burnout
(BO)
secondary
traumatic
stress
(STS)
found.
BO
was
found
be
predictive
by
TAS-20
score
(β=.37,
p=.010),
while
STS
resulted
(β=.54,
p
<.001)
IRI
Empathic
Concern
subscale
(β=.45,
<.001).
No
significant
differences
between
ROs
RTTs
all
considered
variables,
except
(
p=.032),
higher
RTTs.
Conclusions:
Results
showed
no
evidence
high
intrinsic
regarding
Findings
suggest
a
role
empathy
predicting
QoL.
These
results
underscore
importance
promoting
positive
environment
emotional
competencies
prevent
levels.

Gastrointestinal

malignancies,

intervention
remains
sole
therapeutic
approach
offering
possibility
of
a
definite
cure
for
cancer.
Perioperative
anxiety
negatively
impacts
recovery

Recently,
mounting
studies
have
demonstrated
that
proper
nursing
interventions
may
alleviative
perioperative
anxious
illnesses
in
patients
with
We
conducted
first
comprehensive
review
to
summarize
all
current
evidence
on
this
topic.
After
systematically
search
six
databases,
eighteen
relevant
were
included
further
analysis.
The
present
highlighted
there
is
high
prevalence
(e.g.,
colorectal
cancer,
gastric/stomach
hepatocellular
carcinoma,
gallbladder
and
esophageal
cancer),
specific
reliable
methods
reduce
postoperative
anxiety.
These
strategies
include,
but
not
limited
to,
listening
intervention,
implementing
music,
predictive
nursing,
progressive
relaxation
exercises,
psychological
care,
continuous
video-based
education,
multidisciplinary
cooperative
accelerated
rehabilitation

evidence-based
early
warning

high-quality
nursing.
