ABSTRACT Despite substantial evidence indicating an association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and psychological distress, the mechanisms underlying this remain unclear. This naturally occurring, cross‐sectional study examines mediating role of difficulties in emotion regulation moderating effects exposure to acute stress due regional armed conflict mentalising skills on mediation. A total 195 young adults participated two subgroups. One subgroup was recruited before onset conflict, while other shortly after began. The participants completed self‐report questionnaires a written task assess skills. preregistered employed moderated‐mediation model. findings indicated that partially mediated relationship ACEs distress. However, mediation contingent upon indirect effect significant only for individuals who had experienced demonstrated higher Furthermore, mentalisation moderated regulation. These underscore importance incorporating contextual factors individual differences when intervening with distressed youngsters have stress.
