Excessive social media use has become a growing concern due to its potential affect self-perception, particularly through lowered self-esteem and heightened fear of negative evaluation. With the increasing tendency for individuals curate idealised online personas, understanding psychological factors that drive this behaviour is critical. This study applies Self-Discrepancy Theory, Social Comparison Gender Schema Theory explain how constant comparisons, internalised gender norms behaviours. A survey 400 active users in Pakistan was conducted, data were analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). revealed false self-presentation significantly evaluation, which mediated influence on excessive use. comparison, contrary expectations, boosted while also fuelling use, as sought validation online. appeared play moderating role, with women experiencing stronger link between comparison self-esteem.
