Inefficient stock space use in urban and rural areas causes economic losses environmental harm, needing better solutions. Currently, this field is constrained by a relatively underdeveloped research history, which has led to the lack of comprehensive theoretical framework established solution methodologies. Therefore, it crucial clarify principles spatial evolution within approaches promote rapid advancement practical application subsequent theories. This effort will improve understanding effective utilization inefficient inventory encourage critical analysis systematically reviewing developmental trajectory previous research. study aims conduct thorough trajectory, evaluation frameworks, strategies for utilizing Web Science (WOS) China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases. Through CiteSpace visualization analysis, investigates pertinent literature on space, covering period from 2004 present. The results show that exhibits diverse characteristics, with WOS publications focusing four primary dimensions, namely land reuse, establishment systems, governance, development planning. Conversely, CNKI tend prioritize optimization design mechanisms planning development. In relation policy frameworks evolutionary trends, contexts evolved through three distinct phases, embryonic stage (2004–2013), exploration (2013–2020), growth (2020–present). While currently been addressed various initiatives, there remains significant gap focused areas, highlighting necessity an enhanced urban–rural coupling mechanisms. Additionally, efficient both environments multidisciplinary challenge requires innovative models aligned sustainable development, drawing insights disciplines such as economics, architecture,
