Geographic Information Systems Methods in Practice: Higher Education Curricula and Practitioner Registration Standards in South Africa

Integrating geographical information systems (GIS) in various sectors has significantly increased the global demand for skilled professionals, particularly South Africa. Despite integrating GIS methods into higher education curricula, challenges like resource limitations, curriculum updates, and competency standardization may limit practical training scope. This study explores alignment of African qualifications practitioner registration standards, including Qualifications Authority (SAQA), National Qualification Framework (NQF) requirement, Council Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP), Geomatics (SAGC), with job market demands. A structured literature review scientometric research from 2004 to 2023 was used assess current educational programs Africa, identify gaps skills, propose strategies enhance their relevance. The results indicated that, despite adhering policies curriculum’s capacity meet demands is uncertain due insufficient disparities between curricula standards (HEC_PRS). University Cape Town (UCT) Africa (UNISA) are top two institutions contributing practice through published articles, a few coming affiliated centres. revealed significant changes 2018, teacher becoming most prominent theme. 2019–2021 period emphasized interconnectedness development, experiential learning, 21st-century while 2022–2023 segment as prevalent theme this field. prominence key terms “higher education”, “curricula”, “students”, “teaching” highlights role preparing students professional GIS. These findings provide evaluating practices, identifying areas improvement, implementing modifications effectiveness practice.
