Perioperative Trends in Distress Among Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis DOI Creative Commons

ABSTRACT Introduction Distress is common among cancer patients, especially those undergoing surgery. However, no study has systematically analyzed distress trends in this population. The purpose of was to review perioperative rates distress, as well differences across types, patients surgical intervention. Methods A systematic conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and APA PsycINFO (searched until July 17, 2023). Included studies were clinical surgery reporting measured by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) thermometer (DT). Data on patient characteristics, preoperative postoperative extracted. Results pooled, overall calculated weighted means. Subanalysis type performed. Three meta‐analyses conducted: (1) (2) (3) change distress. Fifty‐seven including 13,410 reviewed. Most female (67.4%), White (77.8%), married/partnered (72.2%), with an average age 59.2 years. most cancers breast (14 studies), brain (8), colorectal (7). Weighted mean pre‐ scores 5.1 4.5, respectively. remained high through 30 days postoperatively, then declined thereafter. Brain reported highest (5.1), followed (4.9). Conclusion phase a critical period elevated patients. Preoperatively, experience moderate severe levels which persist throughout early phase, gradually declining from 1‐month mark onwards.

Abstract Purpose. Brain tumor (BT) diagnosis and treatment is a lifechanging experience that might lead to impaired physical, cognitive, emotional, social functioning. An acute stage of BT often starts with neurosurgery. The aim this study reveal describe the experiences primary patients during peri-operative period discuss emerging psychological needs possible support options time. Methods . Five brain − 3 men 2 women - participated in study. Data was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews analyzed using J. A. Smith’s interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results. Analysis revealed five overarching themes: 1) A need control one’s situation; 2) Futile wishing escape from depressive hospital environment; 3) Increased dependency fears for future; 4) Experiences solidarity isolation; 5) Confusion about changes head. Conclusions. Results indicates empowering information sense control, reducing environmental stressors individualizing care, providing specialized mental health care process grieving old life adjusting new one, as well caregivers be beneficial their transition further phases.
