Abstract Registration is the process of spatially and/or temporally aligning different images. It a critical tool that can facilitate automatic tracking pathological changes detected in radiological images and align captured by imaging systems those acquired using acquisition parameters. The longitudinal analysis clinical has significant role helping clinicians evaluate disease progression determine most suitable course treatment for patients. This study provides comprehensive review registration-based approaches play automated change explores three types registration which include rigid, affine, nonrigid registration, as well methods detecting quantifying registered images: intensity-based approach deformation-based approach. After providing an overview background, we highlight applications these methods, specifically focusing on computed tomography (CT) magnetic resonance (MRI) tumors multiple sclerosis (MS), two heavily studied areas tracking. We conclude with discussion recommendation future directions.
