Despite recent advances, the origin and utility of consciousness remains under debate. Using an evolutionary perspective on consciousness, this review elaborates promising theoretical background suggested in temporospatial theory which outlines world-brain alignment as a critical predisposition for controlling behavior adaptation. Such system can be evolutionarily effective only if it provide instant cohesion between subsystems, is possible performs intrinsic activity modified light incoming stimulation. One assume that interaction results particular interference pattern predetermined by connectome complexity. This what organisms experience their exclusive subjective state, allowing anticipation regularities environment. Thus, anticipative emerge regular environment, guides natural selection reinforcing corresponding reactions decreasing entropy. Subsequent evolution requires complicated, layered structures traced from simple to human society. allows us consider mode entropy subject rather than individual entity.

Human cerebral organoids are three-dimensional biological cultures grown in the laboratory to mimic as closely possible cellular composition, structure, and function of corresponding organ, brain. For now, lack blood vessels other characteristics human brain, but also capable having coordinated electrical activity. They have been usefully employed for study several diseases development nervous system unprecedented ways. Research on is proceeding at a very fast pace their complexity bound improve. This raises question whether will be able develop unique feature consciousness. If this case, some ethical issues would arise. In article, we discuss necessary neural correlates constraints emergence consciousness according most debated neuroscientific theories. Based this, consider what moral status potentially conscious brain organoid might be, light ontological arguments. We conclude by proposing precautionary principle leads further investigation. particular, outcomes recent experiments entities potential new kind.

Abstract How global and local activity interact with each other is a common question in complex systems like climate economy. Analogously, the brain too displays ‘global’ that interacts local-regional modulates behavior. The brain’s activity, investigated as signal fMRI, so far, has mainly been conceived non-neuronal noise. We here review findings from healthy clinical populations to demonstrate neural basis functions of show (i) closely coupled physiological signals arousal level; (ii) organizes an elaborated dynamic topography coordinates different forms cognition. also postulate Dual-Layer Model including both background surface layers. Together, latest evidence strongly suggests need go beyond view noise by embracing dual-layer model layer.

Consciousness is constituted by a structure that includes contents as foreground and the environment background. This structural relation between experiential background presupposes relationship brain environment, often neglected in theories of consciousness. The temporo-spatial theory consciousness addresses brain–environment concept labelled ‘temporo-spatial alignment’. There is still controversy surrounding the definition and mechanisms of consciousness. The constrained disorder principle (CDP) defines complex systems by their dynamic borders, limiting inherent disorder. In line with CDP, brain exhibits a bounded borders essential for proper function, efficient energy use, life support under continuous perturbations. brain’s variability contributes to its adaptability flexibility. Neuronal signal challenges association structures consciousness methods assessing present paper discusses some theories about consciousness, emphasizing failure explain variability. This describes how CDP accounts consciousness’s variability, complexity, entropy, uncertainty. Using newly developed second-generation artificial intelligence systems, we describe CDP-based platforms may improve disorders (DoC) accounting platform could be used response current interventions develop new therapeutic regimens patients DoC in future studies.

Consciousness science is marred by disparate constructs and methodologies, making it challenging to systematically compare theories. This foundational crisis casts doubts on the scientific character of field itself. Addressing it, we propose a framework for comparing consciousness theories introducing novel inter-theory classification interface, Measure Centrality Index (MCI). Recognizing its gradient distribution, MCI assesses degree importance specific empirical measure has given theory. We apply probe how measures Global Neuronal Workspace Theory (GNW), Integrated Information (IIT), Temporospatial (TTC) would fare within context other two. demonstrate that direct comparison IIT, GNW, TTC meaningful valid some like Lempel-Ziv Complexity (LZC), Autocorrelation Window (ACW), possibly Mutual (MI). Using electroencephalogram (EEG), we tested the hypothesis that association of a neutral stimulus with self would elicit ultra-fast neural responses from early top-down feedback modulation to late feedforward periods for cognitive processing, resulting in self-prioritization information processing. In two experiments, participants first learned three associations between personal labels (self, friend, stranger) and geometric shapes (Experiment 1) colors 2), then they judged whether shape/color–label pairings matched. Stimuli Experiment 2 were shown social communicative setting avatars facing each other, one aligned participant’s view (first-person perspective) other third-person perspective. The color was present on t-shirt avatar. This setup allowed an examination how contexts (i.e., perspective taking) affect connectivity mediating self-related Functional analyses alpha band (8–12 Hz) revealed self–other discrimination mediated by distinct phases couplings frontal occipital regions, involving phase areas followed later signaling regions. Moreover, while settings influenced phase, did not alter coupling. results indicate regardless type context, represents enhanced state awareness towards stimuli, whereas may be associated processing socially meaningful stimuli.
