Cities need to make themselves energy self-sufficient by exploiting renewable sources and, above all, evaluate the potential and constraints that each city can express virtue of its own characteristics. This study focused on how realisation a community could be approached in urbanised contexts. The methodology involved selection three case studies Rome analysing feasibility, programming design scale, implications planning RECs. Energy communities (ECs) are considered significant instruments in the energy transition toward a low-carbon world. Important elements for creation of ECs individual drivers, motivations, and barriers that could stimulate their creation. In this article, we focus on developing an understanding which aspects favor or slow down establishment community Segrate (Italy). From methodological point view, authors present study based (i) preliminary desk analysis, consisting extensive multidisciplinary literature review; (ii) empirical investigation into case (a municipality Lombardy region, Italy), including energy-related data geospatial information (i.e., from census geographic system); (iii) analysis collection original materials incorporating quantitative qualitative (based online surveys on-the-spot participatory events) relating to context. As acceleration toward the transition to a carbon-neutral energy production becomes an urgent imperative, universities are called play multifaceted role: produce knowledge and cutting-edge research for pursuit of transition; transform infrastructures promote circular economy practices more sustainable use their building stock; citizenship through formal informal education. The authors aim move from these considerations critically present some actions programs in education, research, campus operations which University Bologna is engaged. first part presents overview role this transition, with focus on UI GreenMetric international standard assessing different dimensions sustainability.
