The national level carbon sequestration estimation for urban trees generally relies on diameter at breast height (DBH) increments. However, limited research tree growth has led to uncertain estimates. In this study, we determined the DBH increment of six major species in South Korea using three analytical methods (mean, linear regression, and generalized additive model) two data classifications (total segmented). Additionally, wedeterminded aboveground woody biomass (AGWB) increment, which was calculated estimated accuracy estimates different methods. We found wide variations (0.616 1.002 cm yr−1) among assessed species. Metasequoia glyptostroboides exhibited highest mean growth, while Pinus densiflora showed lowest. peak occurred a median 25.4 Quercus spp. 40.0 Prunus yedoensis. total method overestimations AGWB especially largest (i.e., those top 5% DBH). Our study suggests that relying simple can lead significant uncertainties estimating increment. Therefore, more accurate environments, are needed.

Urban green spaces (UGSs) provide numerous ecosystem services (ESs) that are essential to the well-being of residents. However, these often neglected in regional urban development and spatial planning. This study quantified ESs a 10.25 ha UGS at Chungnam National University, Daejeon, Republic Korea, comprising 27 species with 287 tree individuals, using i-Tree Eco. Key regulating investigated included air pollution removal, carbon storage sequestration, oxygen production, energy use reduction, avoidance surface runoff, replacement functional values. Results revealed significant annual environmental benefits: 131 kg pollutants removed (USD 3739.01 or ₩5.16 M), 1.76 Mg sequestered, which is equivalent 0.18 CO2 ha−1 yr−1 289.85 ₩0.40 2.42 produced, savings (including offset) valued USD 391.29 (₩0.54 203 m3 reduction runoff 413.09 ₩0.57 M). The total benefits trees amounted 4833.86 (₩6.67 16.83/tree, 0.089/capita. Additionally, had values estimated 311,115.17 (₩429.3 underscores selection abundance fundamental for maximizing ES delivery areas, highlighting role UGSs ecological economical sustainability cities. Urban green spaces (UGSs) are critical in providing essential ecosystem services (ESs) that enhance the quality of life urban communities. This study investigated synergies and trade-offs between structural characteristics trees their implications for park management within Yurim Park, Daejeon, South Korea, using i-Tree Eco tool. The specifically focused on regulating supporting services, assessing diversity, air pollution removal, carbon sequestration, avoiding runoff. A systematic review practices complemented empirical analysis to provide comprehensive recommendations. findings a total 305 from 23 species were assessed, revealing moderate diversity significant variations attributes, such as diameter at breast height (DBH), leaf area index (LAI), crown width (CW). These attributes found be strongly correlated with ES outcomes, indicating healthier larger extensive canopies more effective benefits runoff reduction, sequestration. However, also identified trade-offs, particularly regarding volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, which can contribute ground-level ozone formation despite trees’ removal capabilities, sensitivity water stress, requirements shade cooling effects, impacts yield. results highlight importance strategic balance these selecting low-emitting employing incremental pruning pollutant while minimizing VOC emissions. Additionally, underscore significance tree placement landscape patterns optimizing year-round benefits, reducing heat island effects enhancing energy efficiency adjacent buildings. concludes parks like Park offer substantial ecological environmental continuous monitoring adaptive maximize mitigate trade-offs. insights provided selection, placement, design valuable guidance planners architects aiming effectiveness nature-based solutions sustainable development.

Urban parks, a type of urban green space, help mitigate environmental pollution and climate change by absorbing storing atmospheric carbon. Optimizing their carbon-sink capacity requires thoughtful plant community design considering multiple factors. This study analyzed South Korean parks using QGIS i-Tree Eco, integrating satellite imagery with field surveys at both spatial tree scales. Park spaces were classified into six types based on the biotope criteria established in this study. Random forest regression was applied to each identify key variables influencing annual carbon sequestration storage. The relationship between maturity examined for ten dominant species, offering insights selection. Higher coverage more deciduous species linked efficiency While variable importance varied slightly across types, density most influential sequestration, diameter breast height age These findings provide integrated short-term long-term storage, as well strategic directions structuring communities ecosystems. offers empirical evidence designing carbon-efficient contributing sustainable landscape strategies.

Abstract Religious landscapes provide underexplored contributions to carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation. This study uses remote sensing spatial analysis evaluate the storage potential ecological resilience of Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Between 2016 2022, increased by 17.8%, with tree canopy contributing over 1,300 tons carbon. Despite a recent decline rate, habitat connectivity remains high, while indices indicate growing species richness evenness. Economic valuation estimates site’s at USD 16–19 million, aligned Taiwan’s 2024 Carbon Fee Policy. Comparative landscape metrics suggest that temple-managed green spaces mitigate fragmentation more effectively than passive conservation models. These findings support integration faith-driven sacred into offset programs nature-based climate solutions. The highlights policy relevance religious sites as multifunctional heritage sustainability national strategies.

Against the backdrop of global climate change and rapid urbanisation, carbon-neutral urban governance sustainable development have become core issues concern to international community. As world’s largest carbon emitter, Chinese cities shoulder significant responsibility achieving “dual-carbon” goal. This study utilised a unique panel dataset 300 in China from 2015 2022 proposed multi-dimensional analytical framework perspective environmental sociology. paper empirically examines impact mechanism on its regional heterogeneity by using this framework. The research findings are as follows: First, has promoting effect cities. Secondly, technological input (the number scientific researchers) plays mediating role between development, indicating that technology diffusion is an important way for transmission policy effects. Thirdly, analysis indicates due inclination resource concentration, western contribute most followed eastern cities, central least development. region was identified second weakest weakest. provides theoretical empirical basis differentiated formulation neutrality policies, strengthening support, optimising collaborative governance.

Using Shanghai Century Park a case study, study aims to develop an applicable and reliable workflow accurately assess the sequestration capacity from spatial–temporal perspective. Firstly, random forest model is employed for biotope classification mapping in park based on multi-source data, including raw spectral bands, vegetation indices, texture features. Subsequently, Net Primary Productivity biomass different types calculated, enabling dynamic monitoring park’s 2018 2023. Moreover, explores main factors influencing changes management The findings reveal: (1) application imagery data enhances accuracy mapping, with winter proving more precise classification. (2) From 2023, Park’s showed fluctuating upward trend, variations abilities within park. (3) Renovation construction work related significantly impacted capacity. Finally, proposes optimization strategies focused species selection layout, planting density, management.
