Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea is a common postharvest disease in strawberries, reducing shelf life considerably. We investigated the potential of yeast-like biocontrol fungus Aureobasidium pullulans (AP-SLU6) vectored bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) Flying Doctors® system to inhibit pathogen and increase harvested strawberries (cultivar Sonata). Using as vectors various agents becoming increasingly popular, but any potentially negative effects on bee performance have been understudied. Our results show that, over 4-week period trial, activity bees were not negatively affected A. pullulans. The successfully picked up powder formulation; then, they carried deposited it flowers. vectoring agent significantly reduced gray development fruits 45% increased 100% comparison with control treatments. This suggests that applied during flowering infection thus, effectively protected from mold. In addition, bee-vectored application was found be more effective than spray because latter may temporarily humidity around flower, thereby creating suitable environment for thrive. summary, our study demonstrates can decrease improve without adversely affecting bees, thus providing basis sustainable efficient strawberry.[Formula: see text] Copyright © 2022 Author(s). an open access article distributed under CC BY 4.0 International license.

Microbial diversity present on grapes in wineries, and throughout fermentation has been associated with important metabolites for final wine quality. Although microbiome-metabolome associations have well characterized could be used as indicators of quality, the impact regionality microbiome metabolome is not known. Additionally, studies between conducted single species grape such Vitis vinifera instead other interspecific hybrids. Pennsylvania industry relatively young compared to California, experiencing rapid growth over past decade expected continue grow future. Pennsylvania’s climate cold winters high levels rainfall growing season favors cultivation hybrid ssp. Chambourcin, one most commonly grown varieties state. Chambourcin a prime candidate studying interactions shape future winemaking. Here, we identify first time regional distribution microbial communities their volatile during (0–20 days) by integrating throughput Illumina sequencing (16S ITS) headspace-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Analyzing 88 samples from nine wineries Central East regions, observed early stages (1–4 where non- Saccharomyces yeasts Starmerella Aureobasidium Oenococcus bacteria, Sphingomonas , likely contribute terroir resulting wines. Furthermore, key differentiators two regions Pennsylvania, identified LEfSe analysis, include fungal genera Cladosporium Kazachstania bacterial Lactococcus Microbacterium . Moreover, 29 were discriminated significantly (variable importance projection > 1) shown Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis. Finally, Spearman’s correlation differences microbial-metabolite that targeted manipulation improve quality preserve regionality. In summary, these results demonstrate signatures differential microorganisms further support wines Pennsylvania.

To address a knowledge gap about the grape berry mycobiome from Washington State vineyards, next-generation sequencing of internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1) was used to identify native yeast and fungal species on berries cultivar 'Cabernet Sauvignon' two vineyards at veraison harvest in 2015 2016. Four hundred fifty-six different amplicon sequence variants (ASV), representing 184 distinct taxa, 2467 non-yeast ASV (791 taxa) were identified this study. A set 50 recurrent including Phaeococcomyces, Vishniacozyma Metschnikowia, found both locations sampling years. These monitored vineyard into laboratory-scale spontaneous fermentations. Taxa assignable Metschnikowia Saccharomyces persisted during fermentation, whereas Curvibasidium, which also has possible impact biocontrol wine quality, did not. Sulfite generally reduced diversity richness, but its effect abundance specific yeasts fermentation negligible. Among 106 recurring Alternaria, Cladosporium Ulocladium especially abundant vineyard. Vineyard location primary factor that accounted for variation among communities, followed by year developmental stage. The mycobiomes compared those other parts world. Sixteen appeared be unique vineyards. This subset contained higher proportion associated with cold extreme environments, relative localities. Certain known suppress diseases or modify sensory properties present likely have consequences health quality.
