ABSTRACT Aim This study sets out to understand the variability in larval traits of dispersive life stages a famous invader, European shore crab Carcinus maenas , its native distribution range. Location North East Atlantic coast from Norwegian Arctic southern limit C. Southern Spain. Taxon (Crustacea, Decapoda). Methods We quantified latitudinal patterns body mass, elemental composition (C and N content), thermal tolerance first stage. collected crabs four populations spanning 25° latitude (Vigo Northern Spain; Bergen, Trondheim, Bodø Norway) reanalysed published unpublished data mass additional Germany, Wales, France, Furthermore, we used two laboratory experiments test limits stage Vigo populations. In experiment, reared larvae hatching Zoea II at seven temperatures (9°C–27°C) LT 50 6°C. second exposed freshly hatched acutely increasing or decreasing (up 40°C down 3°C). Results Across entire range, found substantial increase dry carbon nitrogen content with latitude. exhibited higher survival 9°C than population. 6°C increased South North. All showed high range 12°C–24°C but low 27°C. Main Conclusions Larval by using is not clearly related acute experiments, indicating that each method assesses different aspects tolerance. Tolerance temperature correlated positively temperature, suggesting variation among females responses reflects general physiological quality rather trade‐offs. provide evidence for potentially adaptive variations across gradient .
