Light plays a significant role in microalgae cultivation, significantly influencing critical parameters, including biomass production, pigment content, and the accumulation of metabolic compounds. This study was intricately designed to optimize light intensities, explicitly targeting enhancing growth, pigmentation, antioxidative properties green microalga, Scenedesmus falcatus (KU.B1). Additionally, delved into photosynthetic efficiency responses S. falcatus. The cultivation conducted TRIS-acetate-phosphate medium (TAP medium) under different intensities 100, 500, 1000 μmol photons m-2·s-1 within photoperiodic cycle 12 h dark. Results indicated gradual increase growth high conditions at m-2·s-1, reaching maximum optical density 1.33 ± 0.03 total chlorophyll content 22.67 0.2 μg/ml 120 h. Conversely, slower rate observed low 100 m-2·s-1. However, noteworthy reductions quantum yield (Fv/Fm) actual (Y(II)) were reflecting decline algal efficiency. Interestingly, these changes concurrent with amount beta-carotene (919.83 26.33 mg/g sample), lutein (34.56 0.19 canthaxanthin (24.00 0.38 sample) cells. Nevertheless, it noted that antioxidant activities levels phenolic compounds (TPCs) decreased IC50 DPPH assay recorded 218.00 4.24 TPC 230.83 86.75 mg GAE/g. findings suggested elevated intensity enhanced facilitated valuable carotenoid falcatus, presenting potential applications functional food industry.

Arthospira platensis is a filamentous cyanobacterium considered an important source of phycobiliproteins (PBP), class water-soluble pigments with wide range applications. Although several extraction and purification techniques PBP have been reported, there still need for strategies that achieve balance between simplicity, cost-effectiveness, scalability. To address this need, study systematically evaluated conventional methods—homogenisation, freeze–thaw cycles, maceration. Maceration showed the best yield purity recovery among tested techniques, under optimal conditions (three 2 h/cycle, 0.1 M phosphate buffer), 55.9 mg/g biomass phycocyanin (PC) 24.9 allophycocyanin (APC) notable antioxidant capacity (Folin-Ciocalteu’s ABTS●+ assays) were yielded. Among ammonium sulphate fractionation achieved 2.3 recoveries 92.9% 79.9% PC APC, respectively, while 0.5% activated carbon resulted in extract 2.5 90.9% 87.2% (APC). The suggested procedures could be fast cost-effective way to obtain cosmetic-grade PBP, thus offering accessible solution industries prioritising sustainable economically viable production pipelines.

Microalgae have gained significant attention as sustainable sources of high value compounds, such bioactive polysaccharides that are usually rich in sulfated groups and exhibit antioxidant properties. Here, 14 new microalgae strains the genera Tetraselmis, Dunaliella, Nannochloropsis, isolated from Greek coastal lagoons were analyzed to quantify characterize their polysaccharide content. Heterogeneity was observed regarding content total sugars (5.5-40.9 g/100 g dry biomass). The with a sugar above 20% concerning total, α- β-glucans. Tetraselmis verrucosa f. rubens PLA1-2 T. suecica T3-1 β-glucans (11%, 8.1%, respectively). two they mainly composed glucose galactose. fractionated using ion-exchange-chromatography. anionic fraction polysaccharides, had capacity, exhibited healing did not negatively influence viability human cells, while exhibiting antiviral properties against replication Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), median efficient concentrations (EC50) at range 210-258 μg/mL.

The rapid growth of the dairy industry has resulted in a significant increase generation effluents, which are characterized by high organic content that poses environmental challenges. In alignment with sustainable practices and principles circular economy, this study investigates valorization cheese whey (CW) effluents through cultivation microalga Dunaliella tertiolecta under mixotrophic conditions. research aims to utilize as supplemental medium enhance production algal biomass extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs). results reveal CW facilitated 37% improvement D. led an approximately eight times greater productivity compared photoautotrophic conditions, while EPS increased 30%. Chemical techno-functional analyses microalgal EPSs suggest promising applications natural product additives for food industry. Biomass derived from culture demonstrated antioxidant activity total polyphenols content. Additionally, lipid profile revealed 16 distinct fatty acids. On other hand, exhibited higher protein levels acids, indicating influence mode on biochemical composition. Regarding EPSs, elevated content, well sugar levels. Furthermore, produced conditions superior properties those culture, making them ideal candidates use alternative additives.

The propensity to accumulate high-value metabolites under specific conditions makes microalgae promising candidates for commercial applications. Here, the freshwater microalga Cyanophora paradoxa CCAP 981/1 was cultivated varying (control, nitrogen limitation, NaCl supplementation and blue light exposure) biological activity of corresponding biomass extracts assessed against human breast (MCF-7) lung (A549) cancer cell lines. stress treatments hindered growth C. paradoxa, control displaying highest rate (0.16 d−1 ± 0.01). Biomass screening by GCMS HPLC identified diverse bioactive compounds including pigments (chlorophylls, xanthophylls, carotenes) fatty acids (e.g., EPA). cultivation returned yields (724 mg), zeaxanthin (6.8 mg g−1), EPA (1.1 g−1) phycocyanin (113.9 while treatment enhanced proportions unsaturated forms C18 (34.3%). Extracts dried obtained cold maceration using solvents increasing polarity were used in MCF-7 A549 cells. Ethyl acetate from nitrogen-limited cultures reduced viability (~70%) after 72 h. However, diethyl ether methanol showed no impact on viability. Furthermore, acridine orange staining revealed significant DNA damage these lines upon exposure extracts. Overall, minimal impacts observed here supports considering as a source natural with applications various biotechnological sectors.

Marine microalgae offer significant potential as sustainably cultivable microorganisms for the biorefining of a diverse array functional metabolites. In this study, three species marine microalgae, Tetraselmis chuii Butcher CCAP 66/21B (Chlorophyte), Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin 1052/1 (Diatom) and Amphidinium carterae Hulburt 1102/8 (Dinoflagellate), were batch cultivated their biomass retrieved analysis in terms pigment fatty acid composition well bioactivity potential. Sequential solvent maceration returned extracts was used to determine antioxidant capacity assess growth inhibition against A549 (a human lung carcinoma) MCF-7 breast cell lines. The A. showed higher (≤ 33.5 μmol Trolox Equivalent mg Recovered Dried Material‒1) compared other extracts. No major cytotoxic activity nor production reactive oxygen observed using T. P. tricornutum. However, methanolic extraction inhibited both cells (< 4%) at 25, 50 100 µg ml−1 concentrations, determined MTS assay AO/PI staining. Microalgal metabolites have practical applications variety industrial sectors. absence toxicity substantial confirm suitability incorporation into animal feeds or nutrition supplements. also appears be promising source bioactives that can further valorized via multi-compound biorefinery pipelines.
