Abstract Sharks and rays are among the most threatened vertebrates, mostly due to commercial fisheries. Data on incidental capture is sparse, but it estimated that about 50% of reported global catches elasmobranchs from bycatch. Elasmobranchs captured in a variety fishing gear throughout world. One promising strategy minimize release live sharks rays. However, so far, no critical analysis had been carried out assess importance as measure mitigate impacts Results indicated despite onboard releases being cited Plans Action (along ZEEs) recommendations/regulations Regional Fisheries Management Commissions (in international waters), this treated secondary has voluntary adherence, which can significantly reduce its efficiency. Moreover, Best Fishing Practice Manuals currently available, although priority, them do not consider dynamics location/fishing modality for was developed. The skate fauna in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean (SWA; 34–55° S) is represented by ~32 species, many of which share external features that have led to misidentifications and deficient fishery statistics. use DNA barcoding discriminate SWA species was explored after 20 years surveys. COI sequences were subjected distance-based neighbor-joining (NJ), maximum likelihood (ML), barcode index number (BIN), automatic gap discovery (ABGD), nucleotide diagnostic character (NDC) analyses. For widely distributed a haplotype network built. Overall, 187 specimens 31 egg cases from 26 barcoded. NJ ML analyses showed nearly all exhibited unique barcodes or clusters closely related haplotypes, except for Psammobatis normani/P. rudis Dipturus trachyderma/D. argentinensis. first pair discriminated NCD. BIN analysis recovered 17 groups, whereas ABGD 23, better reflecting taxonomic diversity. In summary, 24 resolved COI. Phylogeographic signals observed Amblyraja doellojuradoi Zearaja brevicaudata. Compiling our results with data BOLD, almost occurring area possess barcodes, contributing completing curating BOLD reference library, constitutes an important tool resolving issues, tracing products, performing eDNA biomonitoring.

Abstract Statistical fisheries data are usually obtained during landings, through rapid fish classification and their categorization under the trade names given to species or groups of species. However, is often difficult, particularly concerning elasmobranchs whose fins heads have been removed, leading labelling errors. The aim this paper identify ray composition landed in south‐east Brazil, providing identification strategies support a plan for more efficient management. Samples were from artisanal fleet between November 2012 May 2014. For taxonomic whole processed animals ( n = 279, belonging 10 species), morphological, metric, molecular techniques employed. common name used by fishermen was related location where they lived than fishing gear used. Morphometric analyses resulted pectoral fin length weight conversion equations individuals each species, variables found be diagnostic genus. A genetic identification, based on sequencing mitochondrial genes cytochrome b oxidase I, applied verify morphological identification. dichotomous key that allowed at level morphology developed. approach field tested deemed adequate, robust monitoring strategy estimating biomass specific rays.
