Companion Animal Fostering as Health Promotion: A Literature Review

There is growing interest in the health-promoting potential of human-companion animal relationships from a broad public health perspective while acknowledging barriers to ownership, particularly for older adults. Companion fostering an alternative pet ownership that aligns with Ottawa Charter promotion principle caring others everyday settings promotes health. ‘The Sanctuary’ – developing a human-animal model to promote health in a supported residential aged care setting

Abstract Human-animal relationships are vital for many older persons. Finding ways to include animals in aged care settings can be part of reorienting from a solely humancentric focus human-animal inclusive one the 21st century. This case study project report describes development an animal model Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF) regional town Australia. The model’s primary objective was facilitate residents’ empowerment through safe engagements with as source health and wellbeing while incorporating best practise animal-care husbandry. Exemplars used inform included Eden AlternativeTM Farms. Sanctuary sought cover several gaps identified these approaches. These clear policies protocols regarding welfare, infrastructure needs (animal housing designated interaction areas), staffing models, stakeholder engagement approaches (both within RACF local community) developing sustainable resourcing financial frameworks. A vision establish refuge both humans inherent design model, operationalize this vision, policies, plans practical processes were formulated informed by multi-species ethical understandings. Regrettably, it not possible fully implement model. However, is presented aim seeking redress noted 85% wastage global research; that includes research knowledge.
