Carotenoids, the bright yellow, orange, and red pigments of many fruits vegetables, are essential components human diet as bioactive compounds not synthesized in animals. As a staple crop potato has potential to deliver substantial amounts these nutraceuticals despite their lower concentration tubers compared edible organs other plant species. Even small gains tuber carotenoid levels could have significant impact on nutritional value potatoes. This review will focus current status future perspectives biofortification with conventional breeding biotechnological approaches. The high biodiversity composition is presented, an emphasis under-exploited native germplasm that represents wide reservoir useful genetic variants breed carotenoid-rich varieties. following section describes structural genes involved metabolism storage known major accumulation potato, together strategies harnessed expression changes increase content. Finally, little information available regulation desirable advances discussed.

In recent years, the interest in developing genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs), including GMMs developed by genome editing, for use environment has significantly increased. However, scientific knowledge on ecology of such is severely limited. There also little experience at hands regulators how to evaluate environmental safety and assess whether they provide sustainable alternatives current (agricultural) production systems. This review analyzes two different GMM applications, GM microalgae biofuel nitrogen-fixing soil bacteria as biofertilizers. We challenges posed regulatory risk assessment (ERA) against background GMO legislation existing European Union (EU). Based our analysis, we present recommendations ERA monitoring particular improvement EU guidance. explore approaches technology can a framework broader applications. To this end, recommend implementing an evidence-based sustainability analysis other methods support decision making address societal concerns linked applications environment.

Abstract Recent innovations in biotechnology, above all the use of genome editing like CRISPR/Cas plant breeding, have led authorities across globe to question adequacy regulatory policies. Focusing on situation European Union, this article claims that inability establish whether new genomic techniques (NGTs) were used breeding a particular crop functions as main driver behind dawning policy changes concerning NGTs breeding. This ignorance takes form an institutional risk: are unable execute regulation, they entering impasse. Drawing comparison writings German sociologist Heinrich Popitz, who spoke ‘preventive effect ignorance’, explores ‘legislative ignorance’ change NGT case and attempts draw general conclusions for similar situations science innovation policy.
