Drug-resistant epilepsy associated with peripheral complement decreases and sex-specific cytokine imbalances: a pilot study

Drug-resistant
epilepsy
(DRE)
presents

immune

are

recognized,

complement
system
remains
insufficiently
explored
DRE.

DRE
patients

imbalances.

findings
suggest

underlying
vulnerability
that
may
be
sex-dependent

investigation

Epilepsy
is
a
multifaceted
neurological
disorder
characterized
by
recurrent
seizures
and
associated
with
molecular
immune
alterations
in
key
brain
regions.
The
GASH/Sal
(Genetic
Audiogenic
Seizure
Hamster,
Salamanca),
genetic
model
for
audiogenic
epilepsy,
provides
powerful
tool
to
study
seizure
mechanisms
resistance
predisposed
individuals.
This
investigates
the
proteomic
responses
triggered
kindling
inferior
colliculus,
comparing
non-responder
animals
exhibiting
reduced
severity
following
repeated
stimulation
versus
naïve
hamsters.
To
assess
auditory
pathway
functionality,
Auditory
Brainstem
Responses
(ABRs)
were
recorded,
revealing
neuronal
activity
nerve
of
non-responders,
while
central
processing
remained
unaffected.
Cytokine
profiling
demonstrated
increased
levels
proinflammatory
markers,
including
IL-1
alpha
(Interleukin-1
alpha),
IL-10
(Interleukin-10),
TGF-beta
(Transforming
Growth
Factor
beta),
alongside
decreased
IGF-1
(Insulin-like
1)
levels,
highlighting
systemic
inflammation

Objectives
This
study
aims
to
evaluate
cognitive
impairment
utilizing
the
Montreal
Cognitive
Assessment
(MoCA)
scale,
while
also
exploring
correlation
between

neurotrophic

(BDNF),
Beta
Secretase-1
(BACE1),
Vascular
Endothelial
Growth
Factors
(VEGF),

in
adults
living
with
epilepsy.
Methods
In
this
study,
74
participants
aged
18
50
years,
who
were
visiting
neurology
outpatient
consultations,
included.
The
assessment
was
executed
using
MoCA
test.
Serum
levels
of
BDNF,
BACE1,
VEGF,
GFAP,
IL-1β
evaluated
through
ELISA
patients
without
impairments.
To
determine
association
scores
both
Spearman
Pearson
analyses,
as
well
linear
regression,
conducted.
Results
Among
PWE,
61
exhibited
determined
by
assessment.
Noteworthy
alterations
