Abstract The public health challenges of suicide include suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) such as ideation nonfatal attempts. STB precede death in the ideation-to-action framework. To better understand relationships psychiatric psychosocial correlates STB, this study examined associations among PTSD related co-occurring symptoms depression alcohol misuse well their interaction with social isolation loneliness on STB. Three hypotheses were tested a population-based sample 1,992 Army National Guard (ANG) members: (1) PTSD, depression, use symptom severity, will be associated (2) severity score combined that use, both, explain more variation than alone, (3) relationship between alone combination moderated by loneliness. Notably, members face both similar distinct stressors compared to active-duty military. Our findings suggest mental ANG are those larger veteran population.
