Variations
in
the
underwater
sound
speed
significantly
influence
propagation
ocean,
thereby
impacting
both
navigation
systems
and
a
substantial
portion
of
marine
organisms
reliant
on
sound.
This
study
utilizes
cruise
data
from
Beibu
Gulf
during
summer
winter
2023–2024
to
explore
seasonal
variations
temperature
salinity
affecting
distribution
characteristics
propagation.
Results
indicate
significant
differences
either
side
30-m
isobath
Gulf,
with
pronounced
changes
corresponding
variations.
In
summer,
exhibits
north-high–south-low
pattern.
areas
shallower
than
30
m,
sonocline
is
predominantly
positive
or
absent,
whereas,
deeper
areas,
it
mainly
negative.
During
winter,
there
south-high–north-low
pattern
across
extremes
m.
Sound
simulations
based
sound-speed
field
reveal
that
sounds
at
100-Hz
frequency
propagate
farther
cover
larger
depths
less
m
compared

Small-
and
medium-sized
ports
(SMSPs)
face
multifaceted
challenges,
including
environmental
pressures
(pollution,
resource
depletion)
as
well
socio-economic
strains
(community
impacts,
trade
dynamics).
Governance
complexities,
regulatory
fragmentation,
limited
funding,
stakeholder
conflicts
further
exacerbate
these
challenges.
This
study
identifies
context-driven
sustainability
indicators
for
SMSPs
proposes
best
practices
to
enhance
their
resilience.
Four
small/medium-sized
in
Crete,
Greece—Souda
(CHA),
Heraklion
(HER),
Rethymnon
(RET),
Sitia
(SIT)—were
evaluated
benchmark
performance
using
tailored
indicators.
The
primary
objectives
were
the
following:
(a)
identify
relevant
SMSPs,
focusing
on
economic,
environmental,
social
aspects,
(b)
propose
enhancing
ports,
considering
unique
characteristics
constraints.
A
combination
of
Best
