Urban–rural fragmentation represents a significant challenge encountered by nations globally, particularly in both developing and developed contexts, during the modernisation process. This study examines effects of rural land system reform on facilitating integrated development between urban areas. The analysis impact 2010 liberalisation transfer policy employs dual machine learning model, utilising provincial-level data from China spanning 2005 to 2022, address limitations traditional causal inference models while ensuring estimation accuracy. findings indicate that significantly enhances urban–rural development, demographic, economic, ecological dimensions. mechanisms encompass facilitation extensive agricultural service operations, new business entities, migration labour, enhancement capital. Furthermore, notable disparities exist reforms across various regions, concerning integration levels. exhibit marginally diminishing trend. influence varies with economic levels, demonstrating nonlinear relationship, most pronounced observed regions moderate development. Additionally, differ based geographic location. policies central region exhibiting effect, followed north-eastern region, western eastern which shows least effect. provides reference for advancing marketisation factors, improving efficiency resource allocation, regionally multiple layers system.

Assessing URI and its driving mechanisms can promote urban–rural integration (URI). However, existing research has often underexplored county-scale analyses within national strategic zones in China given limited attention to the spatiotemporal impacts of drivers. Focusing on Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) China, this study examined dynamics county-level from 2000 2020 analyzed heterogeneity effects drivers using a geo-detector geographically temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model. The findings reveal following: (1) level counties YREB generally increased over period, though social spatial lagged behind economic environmental integration. (2) decreased spatially east west, forming high low levels agglomeration YREB’s urban agglomerations provincial fringes respectively. (3) development, fixed asset investment, transportation accessibility, geographical conditions drove differentiation counties. elevation significantly hindered eastern region, while central region was promoted by investment despite inhibitory effect slope. In western development played critical facilitating role, but slope remained limiting factor. Tailored strategies are needed for different regions URI.
