The increase in the world population exerts significant pressure on expanding global agricultural production. To achieve this, use of fertilizers is fundamental. However, highly soluble traditional chemical can be easily leached and volatilized, causing environmental damage. Therefore, reducing these developing new smart crucial. Biochar, a solid carbon-rich pyrolysis product, has been studied both as standalone fertilizer raw material for sustainable fertilizers. Recently, wide variety materials techniques have used production biochar-based (BBFs) need to grouped critically evaluated. Thus, this study aimed conduct literature review fertilizers, involving different routes synthesis their effects various crops. Recent results indicate growing interest nanomaterials microbial processes producing Most assessed studies biochar produce slow-release also that crop yields reduce leaching volatilization nutrients soil, demonstrating potential an alternative holds importance by negative impacts caused long-term field experiments economic feasibility BBF must carefully studied.
