Using
sunscreens
is
one
of
the
most
widespread
measures
to
protect
human
skin
from
sun
ultraviolet
radiation
(UVR)
damage.
However,
several
studies
have
highlighted
toxicity
certain
inorganic
and
organic
UV
filters
used
in
for
marine
environment
health.
An
alternative
strategy
may
involve
use
natural
products
origin
counteract
UVR-mediated
Ovothiols
are
sulfur-containing
amino
acids
produced
by
invertebrates,
microalgae,
bacteria,
endowed
with
unique
antioxidant
UV-absorption
properties.
This
study
aimed
evaluate
protective
effect
synthetic
L-5-sulfanyl
histidine
derivatives,
inspired
ovothiols,
on
dermal
fibroblasts
(HDFs)
upon
UVA
exposure.
By
using
a
custom-made
experimental
set-up
assess
screening
ability,
we
measured
levels
cytosolic
mitochondrial
reactive
oxygen
species
(ROS),
as
well
cell
viability
apoptosis
HDFs,
presence
tested
compounds,
after
exposure,
flow
cytometry
assays
specific
fluorescent
probes.
The
results
show
that
derivatives
display
capacity
prevent
loss
viability,
production
ROS
induced
exposure
subsequent
apoptosis.
Overall,
this
sheds
light
potential
applications
marine-inspired
developing
eco-safe
UVR
protection.
