Prevalence of Anxiety and Depression Among Sudanese Refugees in Uganda

Abstract
Introduction:
The
ongoing
conflict
in
Sudan
has
resulted
a
massive
displacement
crisis,
with
millions
internally
displaced
and
fleeing
to
neighbouring
countries.
This
study
aims
investigate
the
prevalence
associated
factors
of
depression
anxiety
among
Sudanese
refugees
Kiryandongo
Refugee
Settlement,
Uganda.
findings
will
improve
our
understanding
guide
targeted
interventions
mental
health.
Materials
Methods:
A
cross-sectional
was
conducted
from
December
14
21,
2024,
involving
106
refugees.
Depression
were
assessed
using
Patient
Health
Questionnaire-9
(PHQ-9)
Generalized
Anxiety
Disorder-7
(GAD-7)
questionnaires,
respectively.
Socio-demographic
data
collected
analyzed.
Pearson
Chi-Square
test
used
compare
between
different
status
based
on
characteristics
like
gender,
employment,
living
campus.
Results:
revealed
43%
moderate
severe
24%
anxiety.
Significant
gender
differences
observed,
males
reporting
higher
rates
females
exhibiting
On-campus
residents
showed
depression,
while
off-campus
reported
slightly
rates.
Self-harm
thoughts
significantly
depression.
No
significant
associations
found
health
outcomes
marital
status,
or
families.
Discussion:
face
challenges,
highlighting
need
for
culturally
sensitive
gender-responsive
services.
Future
efforts
should
prioritize
standardized
screenings
address
pre-
post-migration
trauma.
Urgent
actions,
such
as
crisis
teams
mobile
clinics,
are
essential
their
well-being.
