Utilizing Corneal Fluorescein and Conjunctival Lissamine Green Staining Combined with in vivo Confocal Microscopy for Grading the Severity of Dry Eye Disease

Objective:
To
explore
the
application
of
corneal
fluorescein
sodium
(CFS)-conjunctival
lissamine
green
(CLG)
staining
combined
with
in
vivo
confocal
microscopy
(IVCM)
clinical
grading
severity
dry
eye
disease
(DED).
Methods:
Eleven
normal
persons
(4
males
and
7
females)
thirty-two
mild,
moderate,
severe
DED
patients
(aged
22
to
56
years,
mean
age
45.4
±
12.9
years;14
18
were
included
for
CFS-CLG
staining.
The
stained
positive
areas
observed
recorded
number
morphology
points.
Subsequently,
cell
density
conjunctival
cells
analyzed
by
IVCM.
Results:
revealed
that
CFS-stained
points
not
significantly
increased
mild
DED,
there
was
a
small
amount
CLG
temporal
bulbar
conjunctiva;
moderate
compared
nasal
conjunctiva
diffuse
flake
observed;
cornea
had
most
fluorescein-stained
points,
large
IVCM
examination
showed
epithelial
basal
decreased,
while
activated
Langerhans
DED.
Meanwhile,
superficial
stromal
became
irregular
decreased
goblet
also
reduced
Moreover,
Conclusion:
Observing
detecting
cells,
IVCM,
which
may
be
reliable
basis
severity.

Background/Objectives:
A
probiotic
Streptococcus
thermophilus
(iHA318)
has
been
demonstrated
to
alleviate
dry
eye
symptoms
in
a
mouse
model.
This
study
investigated
its
effects
on
mitigation
clinical
trial.
Methods:
total
of
68
volunteers
were
recruited
the
double-blind
trial
and
randomly
divided
into
group
placebo
group.
The
received
iHA318
capsules
daily
for
35
days
via
oral
intake,
while
microcrystalline
cellulose
capsules.
Assessments
before
after
intervention
performed
tear
volume
(TV),
break-up
time
(TBUT),
osmolarity
(Osmo),
serum
sialic
acid
(SA)
concentrations,
Ocular
Surface
Disease
Index
(OSDI),
an
impression
cytology
analysis
was
conducted
immunofluorescence
detection
NLRP3
expression.
Results:
significantly
increased
group,

effect

reduction
osmolarity,
